Day trips from London - Small group tours only

I will be in London in July and I am staying at The Grosvenor and want to find a tour company that offers small group tours (16 or less) to Downtown Abbey or other type of tours for the day from London. It would be great to find a company that picks up at my hotel or near my hotel.

Please advise me of some good tour companies that do these type of tours. I went on Viator but they do not tell you the tour company they are using.

Thanks,

Deb

Viator are a third party booking agency, you are better booking direct with a tour company. Premium Tours are one company that do the Downton Abbey tour, see https:/…highclere-castle-downton-abbey-tours

Might not be any tours available as they can sell out.

It’s Downton Abbey aka Highclere.

Highclere is open on limited dates, which you can check here. July is not yet posted that I could find.

Thanks, PMQ, that does make sense.

To the OP, Seektravel

If one of the open dates on the link that PMQ posted fits your schedule, consider visiting Highclere on your own. It is a very easy trip, one hour by train from London Paddington to Newbury, then a 15 minute taxi ride to Highclere.

We booked an afternoon admission (Afternoon tickets allow entry to the Castle between 1pm-4pm. ) which worked out well as we were able to leave Paddington after 0930 and take advantage of the Off Peak fares (£25.50 return/RT about half what a peak return would cost.)

We arrived in Newbury about 1100 (we booked a car with Meridian Cars as we needed a child car seat) They charged £32 to take us to Highclere and pick us up at the appointed time (1430) in our case).

We had plenty of time to tour the gardens and eat lunch in the cafe, very good and pay a visit to see the Egyptian exhibit, before we visited the house at 1 pm. I have to say the house was underwhelming to say the least and we only spent about 20 minutes there. Fortunately the weather was nice so we returned to the gardens until time to leave.

Here is the website for Meridian, if you do take a taxi (there were some waiting at the station), make sure to arrange a pick up time, as we didn't see a taxi rank of waiting taxis at Highclere.

There are two trains an hour back to London, one of which involves a change at Reading. Our Off Peak ticket was valid on any of them, very convenient.

I've had friends who've been on this small group (max 16 people) tour with good reviews https://www.internationalfriends.co.uk/white…

My problem is I have a specific day I can do this. I read that the castle is not open on Friday and Saturday so those days were out and I can only do it on July 29th and I hate big coach buses so that is why I said small. So this really narrows it down. I found this company https:/…

Wondering if they are good?

You’re not interested in traveling independently as I outlined in post 5? It is really very easy and the opposite of a big bus tour for sure.

And you can do it for a lot less than their two options of £120 or £160; very expensive.
