Two weeks Great Britain tour in Sept. 2014 - packing tips?

My husband I have booked a two week tour of England and Scotland in September of 2014. My main question is - what do I pack? Will hotels have hair dryers like most do in the U.S.? How cool will the weather be? Will we have a chance to launder clothes? Should we carry backpacks? Believe me, any suggestions are appreciated.

Many hotels have hair dryers, but you would need to check with each hotel.

It's way too early to ask about the weather. You'd have to ask in October. That said, I've found weather.com to be pretty good as far as temperature ranges if you check a few days before your trip.

If you're on an escorted tour you'd have to check with the tour company about laundering clothes. I haven't stayed in a hotel yet in the UK that has an in house laundry, but there are laundromats (called laundrettes). When I've emailed hotels, they've been happy to tell me if there is a laundrette nearby and how far away it is.

What do you want to carry a backpack for? I use one as a carry on for the plane. We take those small ones with the string straps for day trips.

That's over a year away! Are you packing now??

My suggestion would be to calm down, put your feet up, and browse through the many related posts on here and find out the general advice that way.

For specific advice (eg does a hotel have hair-dryers), check the hotel website or your agent first..

For weather, just assume it won't snow, and hope it will be dry. But it may rain. No-one knows, but you can check historical records and see what its been like for the last 100 Septembers.

What are you doing for money? What would you pack for a week in the US? What do you want to do about "phoning home"? What if you don't like the food?

Enjoy your planning....

Your touring company can answer questions about backpacks/rucksacks, hair dryers and launderettes.

As for clothes, take FAR LESS than you think you'll need. For two weeks I'd pack a pair of black long pants of some kind, jeans/wrinkle-free slacks/etc. and wear a pair of regular jeans on the plane. That's it.

Two pairs of shoes, both comfortable, one that can do duty as "dressier." Look at Aerosoles or Easy Spirit and the like. Wear one pair, pack the other.

Two or three tops, max. Pack a light jacket, wear a sweater on the plane.

As for socks, knee-highs, tights, etc. buy them in-country at the grocery stores, Tesco, Sainsbury, or drug stores, Boots, & etc. as needed.

Same with hats, scarves and gloves, if the weather turns chilly.

Also unless you have toiletries you're devoted to and that come in travel sizes, don't clutter up your luggage with all that heavy stuff. Buy what you need as needed in the UK.

Believe me, they have EVERYTHING we have and more, often of better quality for similar price. Plus it's fun to try familiar things, shampoo and such, in another country!

The one indulgence I would indulge in would be lots of under-things, as they are changed daily and laundry opportunities might be scarce.

Having been to England many times in Sept., all except one year (2011) the weather was glorious (West Midlands) almost every day for the three weeks we were there. In the 70sF and sunny.

In 2011 it was cool and rainy-ish, but not bad over all. A hurricane turned northeast mid-Atlantic and instead of hurtling on to N. America blew over Wales and parts of England and Scotland. I was told that was fairly unusual.

Have fun planning and happy travels!

Pack as light as possible. I went for a month on my own to Europe and travelled with a small carry-on size suitcase. I hand washed undies as I needed them and found a laundry service in Edinburgh. Took everything to them, they washed dried, folded and had it all ready at the end of the day for about £8 and I was free all day to site see! I wore my clothes for as long as possible and did just fine. Most places have hair dryers, take very little in the way of toiletry stuff, women don't worry about make-up do without and give your skin a rest. Dab on a little lipstick and your good to go. I wore hiking boots and took one pair of leather shoes that I could wear for a bit dressy evening. I carried a back pack and packed I to it extra undies and socks. I carried medications with me and did not put in my suitcase. I am 74 years old and checked my bag. I never lost my bag on any of the flights I took. Touch wood!!

Great advice to pack lightly. It's no accident that the old word for luggage was "impedimenta".

Pack all your oldest underwear, wear it once and throw it away, saves lanudry and makes space in your luggage for purchases!!!
