train reservations

My wife and I will be traveling in England and Scotland by train for three weeks in mid to late September. We are planning to get a Britrail pass (probably second class?). Our itinerary will be London to Bath to Moreton-in-Marsh to York to Penrith to Edinburgh to Inverness to Oban (by bus) to Durham to London. Should we get reservations on the trains we want to take, or is it safe to go without reservations? How expensive are reservations, anyway? Thanks for any advice.

1. Re: train reservations

Where does Aberystwyth come into it?

Very few trains in the UK have mandatory reservations and some trains may have none. You can just walk on to the trains, find vacant seats and sit down - or stand if none.

Reservations are free AFAIK - but have to be done at a station, not online, if you already have a ticket

You need to cost it out - if you are planning it to that detail advance purchase tickets (which come with seat reservations) may well be cheaper. It will be a while before they become available - 10 to 12 weeks ahead of travel is normal
