Cardiff - accommodation options for October Rugby World Cup

We were lucky enough to get some tickets for the QF on 6 October last week but all the hotels and B&Bs in Cardiff, Newport etc seem to be full. Has anyone any suggestions for self catering accommodation to suit family group of four adults and one teenager for weekend of 5/6/7th October? I've tried the serviced apartment sites but they are also booked or else only take bookings 3 months in advance! We will have a car but if we're outside of Cardiff we would like the option of taking the train into the match and back again.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you have tried the Preste Gaarden? - they have self catering accommodation right next to the MS as well as B&B.

Yes, thanks for your reply. They have a note on their webpage that they're full for all rugby match dates.

winnieacre,

Travel inn Merthyr Tydfil still has vacancies but You might have a problem with train - game does not kick off until 20:00 and the last train to Merthyr goes around 21:30.

Have you looked at Swansea - last train approx 23:15 - an hour away.

Bristol Parkway Holiday Inn Express is available for £65 a room, its right next to the train station and takes approx 25 minutes to the centre of Cardiff, alternatively have a look at some of the villages outside Newport.

Caerleon is about 5 miles from Newport and has rooms available at The Priory. Malthouse could be worth a try. Roman Lodge hotel also does rooms.

Abergavenny is about 50 minutes by train from Cardiff , but the last train from Cardiff to Abergavenny is 21.50. You could try The Lodge in Abergavenny www.thehillabergavenny.co.uk.

Tyr Pwll Holiday Cottages www.tyr-pwll.co.uk.

You could alsso try Upper Grippath Farm Holiday Cottages www.uppergippath.co.uk these are about 10 minute drive from Newport, where there is a regular train service to Cardiff.

On big match days they set up park and ride facilities well signed from the M4 so it is not a problem to drive to Cardiff. Check www.visitwales.com for details of more accommodation.

Why not try the town of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan. It has several hotels and B&B's. If you are flying into Cardiff then Barry is only 2 miles from the airport(you have to go through Barry to get to Cardiff). The town has an excellent train service straight into Cardiff Central railway station , just a short walk to the stadium. Cardiff has a lot to offer, Barry has to be one of the best kept secrects as I don't see anyone promoting it even though its the nearest town with a lot to offer. If you need any names etc, post it and I'll get it for you.
