Where to stay, where to rent a car? - Edinburgh

Hello Again,

From the research that we have done so far, we are now thinking of renting a car while we are in Edinburgh. We are frist spending some time in London, then taking the train to Edinburgh. We plan to spend some time in Edinburgh, then take a few day trips to go to St. Andrews, Glasgow, Fife, etc. So, where is a good place to stay within Edinburgh that we would also have a spot to part a car? Also want to be close enough that we can go on foot within the city. We are a family of 3, with a 14 year old son. We are all active runners, so walking is not an issue. We don't plan to drive in Edinburgh, just in and out of during our excursions. Also, where best to rent a car? Thank you so much for your time and suggestions!

I see Frances-Jane already recommended the Knight Residence, which is central and offers car parking, in your other thread.

But if you don't want to drive into the city centre at all (good idea!) you are probably best off on either the west (for example, Murrayfield) or south (such as south Newington) parts of the city. Most of the car hire yards are on the west side of the city (near the airport which is an obvious and easy pick-up point) and at least some of your day trips will be in that direction.

At present (and it seems for the next few months) the west side and city centre are subject to disruption due to the construction of a tram system, with substantial congestion and bus detours, so the journey on public transport into the parts of the city that most interest visitors is likely to be easier and quicker from the south.

I would say that for your purposes there's not a lot to choose between these options - in either case, it's easy to get out to the A720 divided highway which runs around the southern margin of the city and travel out in any direction you might wish - the Firth of Forth lies to the north, so you have to start out to the west and cross the bridge if you want to go in that direction!

West Coates or Corstorphine Road on the west side of the city would be good places to stay if planning to drive out of town. From there it is relatively easy access to the Forth Bridge and Fife. Google these roads and add B & B/guest house/hotel and you'll find a selection and of course then check them out on TA!. There is plenty of accomodation there and many have car parking. There is a Dollar and Thrifty in Haymarket Terrace nearby for car hire. West Coates is about a mile to the City Centre. If you stay on Corstorphine Road there are dozens of buses that will get you into the centre quickly-it's a longer walk.

If travelling to Glasgow you would be much better getting the train at Haymarket rather than driving
