Univ of Glasgow - USA college student studying abroad

I'm a third-year college student (from CA, school in CO), and I'm studying abroad in Glasgow, Scotland from September-December (at University of Glasgow).

Any hints on great shopping/restaurants/pubs? Attractions/museums? Anything to do? What the locals wear compared to the US?

Anything at all would be so helpful! Thanks!

Plenty of great shopping , bars and entertainment right there in the vicinity of the university and byres road area. Plenty of quirky vintage shops will soon be calling your name if you like something a little different. University is in the west End which is quite different from the city centre which is something of a shopping mecca of much larger proportions and is five minutes away from University area on the subway. Public transport is relatively cheap and pretty good. Clothing is whatever you want to wear really with the usual tshirt, jeans and hoodies being the default/norm.

Main museums are free and very good eg Kelvingrove Museum, Hunterian at the uni (free for students I believe) and riverside transport museum twenty mins walk from uni (ish).

Have fun.

We dress the same, but eat less ;-)

Glasgow is the 2nd best city in the UK for restaurants and shopping, and the best in the UK for culture IMHO. For music live or DJs it doesn't get much better. You'll love it here I'm sure!

Hi Emily,

You'll have a GREAT time here but hopefully you'll get to see a bit more of Scotland and not just Glasgow. In terms of the Glasgow city, loads of pubs/clubs/bars, have a look at the following:

www.g1group.com (have a look at the Corinthian and Arta)

www.garageglasgow.co.uk (for student clubbing)

www.stravaigin.com (for excellent eating in the west end)

www.glasgow.gov.uk (city council's website - everything is there)

If you've got time to have a look round Scotland, Edinburgh is a must, especially at festival time, it's 50misn by train. Also take a trip up to Inverness and take in the Highland scenery. There's Aberdeen also, a city made of granite and wealthy in terms of oil revenue.

Only down is that we have very long days in summer, but in winter it gets dark early!! Also, bear in mind that the weather isn't that great here!!

Enjoy your time in Glasgow!!

the people in glasgow are very friendly so you should have a great time

top tip - try the fish pakora in the shish mahal in park road

word of warning - glasgow is pretty far north and you are there as we move into winter more or less every day you are there wil be shorter than the day before and it will be getting colder and wetter

the scenery on the west coast of scotland is outstanding to make the best of it yo need to hit the ground funning and get out and about in september while the days are avergly long and its not too cold!!

to prove that the scenery is wonderful get one of your new friends to drive you out the great western road to helensburgh and continue on round the kilcreggan peninsular than cut across country to loch lomond at balloch

choose a bright sunny day and the scenery is stunning best of all even with a top for lunch it will only take 3-4 hours

and it will give you a taste of what is available if you get the time to head further north

think inveraray oban glencoe fort william mallaig kyle of lochalsh applecross shieldaig torridon

let me know if you want more detailed info id offer to give you a test drive myself but sadly we live 350 miles south in flat old cambridedhire now!

(been to colorado - denver, durango, pagosa springs)

Pubs/clubs wise you are spoiled for choice.

Head up Saucihall St for a whole load of student orientated pubs and clubs. Make sure to use your use student card to full advantage in shops/resturants/pubs and entry into nightclubs. Im not sure if you can use the Strathclyde Union. 7 or 8 floors full of stuff to do. The barony bar is excellent and does (or at least used to do) '12 hour Tuesday' where all drinks are 99p from 3pm till 3am. Excellent day/night out. On the Friday in the same bar (within the Strathclyde Union) is TFIF (again 3 till 3) Music, games and a full on party. There are also areas to buy decent cheap food to line your stomach!

If you are into House/Techno/Trance/Dubstep etc check out 'The Arches', 'Sub Club' and 'Soundhaus'.

Rock 'Cathouse' or there is a rock bar on the other side of the station. Quite a nice place too.

If you are dressing to Impress hit 'Karbon' 'Kushion' or the Corinthian.

Live music is all over. You have to check to see whats on if it suits your taste.

s1play.com is good for checking out whats on.

The majority of the above are in the city centre but its all easily accesible via the underground/walk/bus or taxi.

Any questions on Glasgow nightlife give me a shout and Ill put you towards some more sites.
