Travel by train in Western Ireland?

Hi, We would fly into Shannon. We would like to visit Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, and Waterford. What are the best ways to get around? I would like to relax without worry of driving. Is it possible to take trains between major destinations and then book day tours? We like to photograph around sunset/sunrise, so hate to be forced on a bus and miss the best time for photos. Thank you in advance

You can take trains or busses. But there are not that many trains. They are really only between the main population areas e.g. Limerick and Ennis, Galway. Limerick and Tralee, Killarney. Limerick and Cork etc.

All of the day tours are by bus. Unless you take a chauffeur tour.

My suggestion would be to base yourself in 3 locations - all of which have good tour companies:

Killarney:

www.derostours.com

www.oconnorautotours.ie

www.gapofdunloetours.com

Limerick:

www.paddywagontours.com

and Galway - I'm not familiar with the tour companies there but DOKGolf or Rojo or Damian will be able to help you.

In Limerick there are some lovely walks along the north shore of the Shannon where you will be able to get some great sunset shots - assuming the weather cooperates.

In Killarney, head towards the lakes.

A few points of info to help:

From Shannon you could take a bus to Ennis. From Ennis route 350 will bring you to the Cliffs of Moher:

http://buseireann.ie/pdf/1426259770-350.pdf

It is possible to travel by rail from Ennis to Killarney. It is also possible to travel by coach.

Info on the bus network in Co. Kerry:

buseireann.ie/news.php?id=1745&month=Apr

Here is a map of the rail network.

irishrail.ie/travel-information/station-and-…

Nearly all lines radiate from Dublin. An exception though is the scenic cross-country line from Limerick Junction to Waterford and this is the final leg of your route travelling from Killarney to Waterford.

The journey planner on the homepage of www.irishrail.ie will show times.

Hope this helps.

RE: Galway

If you do make it to Galway here is the link to a very reputable tour company that provides excellent tours to the Cliffs of Moher and Connemara, I've also attached the reviews from Trip Advisor.
