End of August to Sept 3 or 4 in Dordogne

We will be flying to Paris from the US end of August (29, 30, or 31), arriving early morning, and wish to fly to BVE in the afternoon or evening. We will be quite jet lag, spending a day at BVE hotel. Ideally, we would like to join a tour through the Dordogne Valley, arriving in Bergerac, and board a train to Bordeaux, and take a flight to Barcelona. We need to arrive in time to catch a conference bus at Barcelona airport Sept 4 @ 14:30 for the drive into the mountain for a conference.

If a tour cannot be realistic, we may have to rent a car in BVE and drop off the car at Bergerac.

Our interest in the tour are caves and scenic drive. We will not tour inside the castles or do wine tasting.

Any suggestion of how many days we need will be appreciated. Initial search of car rental at BVE produced no result.

Thank you very much in advance!

not sure why you'd fly from Paris to Brive -- take the train to Bordeaux and spend the night there.

Then rent a car and drive to the Dordogne for a day or two -- then you can go back to Bordeaux and fly to BCN.

There's plenty to do there to keep you occupied for weeks -- the bigger issue will be winnowing it down to manageable.

That is such a sensible suggestion. We read a tour book that posted a driving route from Sarlat-la-Caneda to Bergerac as a scenic 128 km, through valleys, farmland, cliffs, picturesque villages at every turn. We thought that one way driving would be less time we have to drive, instead of starting and ending in Bordeaux. Perhaps we can take the train from Paris to Bergerac, rest the night there, and pick up the rental car. Or train from Paris to Sarlat-la-Caneda, and pick up a car there, drive to Bergerac in 1.5 days, take the train fro Bergerac, through St Emilion, overnight in Bordeaux, before flying to Barcelona.

The other reason we are looking for a tour is that we have not driven a manual stick shift car for decades.

Any comments is very appreciated. Thank you.

you're missing the very important fact that the train to Bordeaux is a TGV. Brive and Bergerac are going to be "regular" trains that run on a much less regular schedule and go far more slowly, so your total travel time isn't going to be all that different.

128km is still going to be several hours, as you're not going to manage 100km/hour anywhere along that route. 40-50km is going to be a far more common speed limit (and you DO NOT want to speed in France)

There's only one car-rental agency in Sarlat, so I truly wouldn't count on the option of picking up a rental there -- there's not a chance that you'll have an automatic. AT least if you take the train to Bordeaux, there's a half a achance you could request an automatic transmission.
