Train. TGV tickets start as low as 22 euros to Avignon if bought 3 months in advance. You're there in 3.5 hours. What a deal!

Where do you mean by "south of France"? Paris to Nice takes about 5 hours 40 minutes. There are also plane flight, for example, EasyJet, but I can't provide any information. A search on the forum will probably provide some answers.

"TGV tickets start as low as 22 euros to Avignon if bought 3 months in advance. You're there in 3.5 hours.". Not even! Paris- Avignon TGV is 2h40. In 3 hours you're already in Marseilles? But I agree with Mr&Mrs: for Nice, easyJet is the way (or even AF, if you fly return, it's not that expensive if booked ahead). easyJet.com

I think the best way is by train... but I like train travel. Some would say the best way is flying because it's quicker.... but dull, nothing to see. Some would drive so they can take detours if they want. Or is the best way the most economical way?

To answer this question it would be necessary to know where in the south of France, when & how many people. Basically your choice is train, plane or car. All have their advantages & disadvantages.

South of France could also be the Languedoc, Roussillon, Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrenees..

The train is best for most of the major cities. Driving can be nice if you like that and have the time, always many things to see along the way. Air travel can have many hidden costs in transport to and from airports.
