Rudesheim

There are six of us who would like to do a Rhein River tour that includes Rudesheim. There's an Amsterdam to Basel tour that looks good. I was wondering if this is the best tour or if there are any other options that anyone can recommend. Do tour companies offer discounts if there are more people travelling in your group?

Nancy, Amsterdam to Basel is certainly one of the more popular routes for the river cruise industry and almost all the big name brands include a stop in Ruedesheim am Rhein for a few hour. A good resource as to how one company compares to another can be found over on the Cruisecritic.com boards (you can navigate there from TA via the Travel Forum menu (select Cruises).

If you really want to see the Rhine area and are comfortable going independent, the area is easy to navigate via train, ferry, boats (lots of posts on which section is the most picturesque. We've marveled during our week tour of the area on how many river cruise boats passed by and didn't stop. Missed a lot of wonderful towns and castles. We waved at them as they sat on their decks and snapped pictures of things they knew not of.

And yes, most tour companies do offer a discount to the person organizing a group tour. The number that is considered eligible for discounting differs by operator. Check their websites or call their reservation number for the particulars. There are also other discounts that they offer, including referral credits, pay early discounts, etc.

Have several friends doing this route this summer on Viking and I'm excited for them.

We have done Alsace twice. We drove the first time and this past December we took a Tauck Tour Cruise from Cologne to Basel for the fabulous Christmas Markets.

We have sailed the Danube also, but like the Rhine much more.

Strasbourg is an amazing city to visit with interesting architecture, delicious food, La Petite France District and interesting history..

Charming Rudesheim, and Riquewihr, Cologne, the beautiful Rhine Gorge with its castles, and Colmar. Some or all of these are possible, depending on your itinerary.

Enjoy!

I saw the Tauck tour on the Internet. I'd love to do a tour of the Christmas markets. My parents and sister want to catch Rudesheim for the coffee. We'll have to decide how to include both.
