Rhine River tour leaving Rudesheim

We are staying 4 days in Munich for part of our Germany/Switzerland trip and have a Eurail pass. We were thinking of doing a Rhine River trip for one of those days realizing it will be a long day. We can take the train to Rudesheim to catch a boat. Would that be the best recommendation for where to get a boat along the way? From another response to a question, it looks like just going to St. Goar is the most scenic then going all the way to Koblenz from Rudesheim, What cities would be recommended along the way with the Eurail pass?

R'heim (or Bingen) to St. Goar is very scenic and requires only 1.5 hours. But the number of train hours you are investing to reach R'heim and to return to Munich approaches the absurd for such a short cruise - 12+ hours?? This is one of the risks of the rail pass - some end up trying to take full advantage of it but end up in a train all the time and shortchanging their experience in Germany.

Stay the night if you go there; St. Goar is a good overnight spot. You can tour Rheinfels castle (in town) and perhaps visit Marksburg Castle (across the Rhine in Braubach) the next morning before you return to Munich.

Closer to Munich are some other reasonable day trip options. You might for example visit Herrenchiemsee Palace in Prien (one hour outside Munich) which involves a pleasant boat ride across the lake to the island palace (and views of the Alps.)

It is possible, but, as Russ wrote, you would spend most of your day on the trains. Only you can decide if it is worth it.

Bingen has better train connections than Rüdesheim. Even so, unless you start at 5 in the morning you will only get the boat at 2:30 p.m. which leaves very little time to do anything but the boat trip itself.
