Train Question: Bonn to Brussels

We were planning on taking the older, slower train because it's cheaper. Also from posts I've read, the train route, which goes through Koblenz, sounds more scenic. Is my understanding correct and does this make sense?

There's also a 15 minute transfer in Köln. Is 15 minutes enough time if we'll be traveling with some luggage?

Thanks!

You won't pass the scenic part of the Rhine valley south of Koblenz, as you'll be heading north from Bonn to Cologne.

Connections that pass through th Rhine valley are possible but would be a major detour.

15 minutes should be more than enough.

Thanks for your reply. I got confused. Prior to Bonn we will be in Stuttgart. We are traveling from Stuttgart to Brussels, but thought we'd stop in Bonn for the night. I believe the train from Stuttgart to Bonn goes via Koblenz is this the more scenic route. Is this correct?

Alternatively, we could go directly from Stuttgart to Brussels. Any input?

Thank you again.

The direct IC/EC trains to Bonn Hbf do. But there is also the option by ICE train to Bonn-Siegburg and from there by tram to Bonn Hbf.

3 steps to do this for cheap

1. find yourself a good connection to Bonn through the Middle Rhine Valley

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Stuttgart Hbf

Destination: Bonn Hbf

You may click on "-> Advanced selection of means of transport" and change there from "admit changes" to "direct connections".

2. find yourself a good connection from Bonn to Brussels

Start: Bonn Hbf

Destination: Bruxelles-Midi

You'll have to change trains at Köln Hbf. 15 minutes are sufficient but you can change the duration of transfer e.g. to "Duration of transfer at least 20 minutes" if this makes you more confident.

The connections from Köln to Brussels are either by Thalys (THA) or less frequent by ICE. Is a connection which is OK for you by ICE you may try in the next step to buy one ticket from Stuttgart to Brussels with stopover in Bonn. Otherwise buy the tickets for 1. and 2. separately.

3. any good special combining 1. and 2. ?

Calculate the time between arrival in Bonn from step 1 and departure in Bonn from step 2.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Stuttgart Hbf

Destination: Bruxelles-Midi

and add a stopover

Via: Bonn Hbf

and give the duration of the stopover in hh:mm. Does not have to be exact on the minute. E.g. instead of 15:48 you may just type in 15:30 (hh:mm).

.

Another option is to add a further stopover after Bonn

Via: Brühl

But without any stopover duration. This is just to enforce the connection from Bonn to Köln by regional trains (as others don't stop at Brühl station). Now while discounted specials are only good for the trains bought for - this applies only for the long distance trains (IC/EC, ICE, THA). With the regional trains you're flexible, i.e. in this case you can use any earlier regional train from Bonn to Cologne on this travel date.
