Zaragoza or Salamanca?

We will be home exchanging to Madrid in late September. For various reasons, we will need to be out of the Madrid house for a couple of days so we are considering a 2+ day trip to either Zaragoza or Salamanca. We've been to Spain before, even lived in Barcelona for a year in the early '80's, but never visited these two cities. Which is a better bet for just a few days? We like museums, strolling streets, hanging at cafes, etc.

You will not be wrong with any of the two. In both you can do all you like and not be able to see all in just a couple of days. However, both cities are very different, so at the end of the day only you can decide witch one is better for *you*. Look at info and photos online, see which one appeals you more.

Salamanca is probably more "monumental" (the Plaza Mayor, especially at night, is a sight difficult to beat), but for the same reason also more touristy and crowded, it is also a main destination for those attending Spanish courses so it adds to its popularity, crowds... and prices.

On the contrary, Zaragoza has plenty of interesting sights to visit (from Roman remains to art museums, not to say the Mudejar heritage and of course El Pilar basilica) but has somehow managed to stay of the mainstream touristy path, so the atmosphere is more "local and authentic", generally the prices will be lower too.

If you can't decide, throw a coin. It's a win-win, but for different reasons.

Thank you for the thorough response. We may end up visiting both.
