Short break 2,5 days in Fuerteventura, advice needed

Hello guys, we are going to Fuerteventura mid of December for just 2,5 days. Will be renting a car. What would be the best location to stay? It is obvious will not explore the whole island, but would like to see nice places around and enjoy some cozy evenings in the town.

Thanks in advance!

It is possible to tour the island in one day, or you could do the northern part of the island on one day, and the southern half on another.

Caleta de Fuste is in the middle of the east coast, so is an ideal place to base yourself.

See www.caletafuerteventura.com for info and photos of Caleta and the rest of the island.

As it's only about 2.5 hours' drive from top to bottom, and not much at all from left to right, I wouldn't worry too much. It would be best to base yourself where you want to be in the evening. The police here are very hot on drink driving and the limit is very low, so unless you're TT you're going to enjoy your break more if you don't have to drive after your evening meal. There are also very few "proper" roads on the island. Lots of dirt tracks but the average tourist hire car isn't insured for them. So you're going to find you go over the same bits close to home.

I'd say that you'll want to get a taste of the various coastal areas. See something of the Jandia beaches and the fishing village of Morro Jable in the south. A taste of the north would include Corralejo and its dunes plus El Cotillo and its lagoons. To the west there's Caleta and the capital, Puerto del Rosario, which is much smaller than many capitals. The coast to the east is largely inaccessible - it depends on your head for heights etc. There are villages away from the coast all over the place, with expanses of ex-farmland between them, but again some can be difficult for vertigo sufferers. Betancuria is well worth a visit, IMO.

Have you ever been to the Canaries in winter? Be prepared to find that you don't actually want to spend all your time touring round. You may just want to wander locally, giving yourself time to take in the sun, the sea, and the spectacularly different landscapes. That could well take a couple of days minimum. I've sat outside bars overlooking the bay of Corralejo, staring out onto Lobos and Lanzarote islands with their ever-changing rock colours, watching the tide go out or come in, while the whole afternoon slips by. And I haven't been drinking heavily, either :).

You can always come back for a second bite of the cherry.

I would suggest El Cotillo - great beaches, small town, very good restaurants and cafes and great sunset

Thanks SheilaW34,

Your information was useful choosing location to stay. We chose Caleta de Fuste... Last time we were in Gran Canaria, in December as well. The weather was mild with few rain. We are not stressing in order to see everything, as there is always an option to come back and continue exploring. We try to enjoy ourserlves with a glass of local wines, food and feeling the moment...

NomadicTraveller7, thanks for advice. Will not stay in El Cotillo this time, but definitely will make a jump to see it.
