Heard that Tivoli is fabulous. Is day trip from Rome doable?
Also heard same about Spoleta, Viterbo, Anagni, Umbria, Perugia and Assisi. Any feedback?
Tivoli is closest; it has a Renaissance villa with water fountains and, not far away, the summer villa of the emperor Hadrian.
Spoleto (a hill town), Perugia (a city) and Assisi (a hill town, birthplace of St. Francis) are in Umbria, which is a region, and so is Orvieto (a cathedral city built on an outcrop of tufa), which is closer than the others.
Viterbo and Anagni are not often Top-10 destinations for day trips.
A day trip to Tivoli is great. There is detailed information, with photos, at http://tinyurl.com/tivoli-daytrip
Tivoli is a nice and easy travel to get out of Rome only 45 minutes drive, you can spend one day out in the country side of Rome exploring Villa Adriana the summer residence of Emperor Hadrian and then Villa D'este with the fontain supplied by the river water with not pumps....
Enjoy the locaal food too and do not forget that the region produce a very good olive oil , we are in the (Sabina region) ....
