Cycling and Hiking in Mid June

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Italian Alps in mid June and have just discovered Aosta Valley.

Here is the plan: we will be in the area June 9 (Sat) to June 17 (Sun). We would like to do some road cycling and some hiking. We will have a rental car and will rent road bikes in Aosta.

1) We will ride bike for 3 to 4 days, going up Cervinia, Colle del Nivolet and in the valley. Does anyone know of a good place for road bike rental in the area?

2) We will hike in Gran Paradiso Park 4 to 5 days, based in Cogne and/or Pont, hiking up to refugio(s) and spending night(s) there. Will it still to too early in the season to plan hut-to-hut trekking or even hut over night trekking?

THanks all for your help!

Sue

You will have no problem riding your bikes on roads, but hiking will be limited to lower elevation due to snow which in all likelihood will still be on the ground at higher elevation (snowfall this winter has been much above average, and more snow is expected in the coming days!). Besides, huts generally do not open until June 15.

Also, note that there is no road up the Colle del Nivolet on the Aosta side!

FF,

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, we understand that we can not ride up Colle del Nivolet from Aosta. We will drive to Piedmont and ride up there from Locana.

As about the huts opening time, I found two that should be open during our visit according to their website:

Vittorio Sella Refuge (May 26) and Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele (June 8), while others either have not announced their summer open time, or will only open in mid June (June 15). Is it safe to assume that we will be able to hike up to these two huts, one from Cogne, and one from Pont, while they are "open" ? We understand that we will only get a good idea of the snow condition when it's closer to our travel date.

We would love to have some hut to hut or at least hut overnight experience during our visit as we enjoyed our Dolomites hut-to-hut hike a lot and are hoping to have the same kind of experince in the Alps.

Thanks again for your help!

Sue
