Cagliari to Alghero

Can anyone advise if it is easy to travel by train from Cagliari (leaving in morning) to Alghero in one day?

It would be very much quicker by car (200 kms: 2½ - 3 hours), but yes it is possible.

It will mean an early morning start; 06:39 from Cagliari – a change in Sassari – arriving in Alghero at 10:35. (Journey time 4:58)

There are a couple of later trains, but as they will not arrive here until 17:13 or 20:24, I suspect that they may arrive too late to enjoy the day.

Good Luck.

Actually, the earliest train arrives in Alghero at 11.37 (not 11.35)

You may wish to look up the train schedules on www.trenitalia.com (although the Sassari/Alghero stretch is operated by a different company, the schedules are there).

You could also catch a bus (via Sassari) but it might be even less convenient - see www.getaroundsardinia.com.

I stand corrected. 10:35 is the arrival time in Sassari.

There is also a bus direct to the airport to match the Ryanair flights.

The schedule is here:

Very convenient if you are flying out, and only a few minutes back into town by city bus.

You can travel by train OR by bus between Cagliari and Alghero. Suggest that you look up the schedules to determine the better connections (you must connect in Sassari either way):

www.trenitalia.com (train between Cagliari and Sassari)

www.ferroviesardegna.it (bus between Cagliari and Sassari; bus between Sassari and Alghero; train between Sassari and Alghero).

NOTE: The train between Sassari and Alghero is NOT NOT operated by Trenitalia. It is a local train service operated by Ferrovie della Sardegna.

NOTE: The train between Sassari and Alghero won't take you into the main part of Alghero, but 1.5 kilometers north, at the Alghero Lido, which has several hotels along the beach. If you want to get to the main part of Alghero (including the historic center), take the bus, not the train.

NOTE: The non-stop bus between Cagliari and Sassari will be faster than the train. It is schedule 343 on the website www.ferroviesardegna.it Sassari to Alghero is schedule 323

BEWARE: Some buses don't run on Sundays. Check the schedule carefully.

NOTE: The bus and train stations in Cagliari are 200 yards apart.

The bus and train stations in Sassari are 400 yards apart.

The bus terminus in Alghero is 200 yards from the entrance to the Old Town. The bus drops you within 100 yards of the Hotel Catalunya and 250 yards of the Hotel San Francesco.

I've done this trip myself and can tell you that it is very easy.
