Day hiking tour in the mountains

We are going to be visiting Cagliari in May next year and are interested in a day tour inland to a national park or nature reserve where we can hike. It wasnt our intention to hire a car so wondered if there are any organised tours that do this. I looked under day tour operators in Things To Do from Cagliari but most seemed to be driving only and mostly down the coast. Lugori Day Tours was the only one that seemed to offer hiking but I found the information on their website difficult to follow.

Most of the guides that do this sort of trip are in Ogliastra, particularly for Gola di Goruppu, Tiscali and the surrounding areas.

It might be worth contacting one of them to see if they know anyone based around Cagliari, but I am a little doubtful as Cagliari and its immediate surroundings are not really a hiking areas.

You could try asking at http://www.ghivine.com/territorio.htm

The main National Park in Sardinia is the Parco Gennargentu & Golfo di Orosei - much of it more commonly referred to as the Barbagia by locals. Common points of access are Aritzo, Desulo & Fonni on it's south & west perimeter, Baunei in the south and Orgosolo, Oliena, Dorgali & Cala Gonone in the North & East. The best point of access for Mt Tiscali et al is from the Dorgali area.

The problem you have doing it as a daytour from Cagliari is two-fold. The minimum return time to a trail head is at least 3 hours, 4hours or more to what I consider the best day hike options - Fonni for the high internal peaks & Oliena / Cala Gonone for the Supramonte/ Golfo di Orosei. Furthermore, the bulk of guides are based in these areas and either expect to meet you in situ or will charge a hefty transfer fee( running a vehicle here is expensive...).

There is also plenty of hiking closer to Cagliari. Some of my favourite mountain daywalks are within the Monte Linas - MurruMannu range accessed via Villacidro, Fluminimaggiore & Gonnosfanadiga. The walk to and around the waterfall Piscina Irgas is a particular favourite. Furthermore, immediately to the west of Cagliari there is the WWF backed park Oasidi Monte Arcosu, and just to the East there are the Sette Fratelli peaks - both offering a range of day hiking oppotunities allbeit not perhaps of the quality of say the Sos Nidos/ Monte Corrasi loop in the Supramonte Mountains near Oliena- my favourite day walk on Sardinia. Bear in mind at that time of year it starts to get quite hot quite quickly - you wouldn't want to be doing any serious ascent from 11.00am onwards.

I don't know Lugori tours and admittedly, like many here, their website is a bit of a mess but buried in it I do see they offer tailored guided walks to most of what I've outlined. They seem to have a minimum restriction of four people though. A guide that is popular with the locals and certainly does personal tours is Leonella Trekking.:

I don't know if she speaks English though, I can find out pretty quickly :)

Is staying the night nearer the hiking locale and'or hiring a car out of the question?

Thanks for your detailed answer. We will be going to the mountains and hiking later in our trip to Sardinia as part of an organised tour. We were just looking at how many days to spend in Cagliari before joining the tour and things we could do. Apart from city sights we would be interested in going into the countryside nearby if there was an option within about an hour's drive where there was some pleasant hiking available.

We have some basic Italian though a bit out of practice. If it wasn't too difficult we would consider hiring a car just for a day but prefer a tour if available and not too expensive.

No worries, the three areas I mentioned in the 3rd paragraph above are all within an hour, 30mins even, drive from Cagliari. The walk around the Piscina Irgas area is particularly attractive and is also great for a freshwater dip in May.

Another interesting hike near Cagliari is the coastal Sentiero Miniere nel Blu. Start at the Masua end, which is about 45 mins from Cagliari. Indeed, if heading that way, I would part walk it, then head over to Fluminmaggiore to do the hike on the old Roman Road that runs through the forests between the caves at Grotto Su Mannau and the Roman temple of Antas, taking in the caves at temple at each end. Su Mannau is probably my favourite of the showcaves on Sardinia.

Hiking views & path at Masua: https://www.google.it/search?q=masua+sentiero&tbm=isch

Su Mannau / Antas area: https://www.google.it/search?q=su+mannau+antas&tbm=isch

Piscina Irgas: https://www.google.it/search?q=irgas+mannu&tbm=isch

Hopefully , you get more or less the same image search results I do!

Finally, and this is something you'll certainly be able to find a day tour for though driving yourself will give more flexibility, consider visiting Sardinia's only UNESCO site, the 3500ish year old fort & village at Barumini. This is ideal to tie in with a hike on the adjacent, rather unique wild horse covered mountain plateau called the Giara .

Leonella definitely covers all of the above,as I suspect would Lugori.

The folks, mainly from Oristano Province, that run Sardegna Trail Running sports club arrange a lot of day hikes in the Cagliari area and could be worth getting in touch with. They'll know all the guides on the island (many of their members are the guides) and at least one is definitely an English speaker.
