Visiting Mt Etna without a tour guide

What is the best and least expensive way to visit Mt Etna from Taormina. Do I really need to book a tour to visit Mt Etna from Taormina? we are 4 adults. Thank you in advance.

You never need to book a tour as you can walk Etna on your own.

Take an early morning train or bus from Taormina to Catania, and then take the once daily AST bus onward to Etna.

Hi Vagabonda,

I found this thread and wanted to ask another question about traveling to Etna. I'm going to have a car, and I'd like to drive there myself for a short hike/walk around the craters. Can you direct me to information on the best place to drive to around the volcano and where it would be possible to park? I'll be going there in early July.

Thank you!

Hi Liza,

Assuming you're intending Etna Sud, Rifugio Sapienza is the highest point you can drive on the mountain.

You can reach this location via Nicolosi or Zafferanea Etna.

The funivia is located here.

Hi Vagabonda. We too are planning to drive to Mount Etna by car and hoping to ride the cable car as high up as it goes.

Looking at that website it shows the address as -

FUNIVIA DELL'ETNA SPA

Località Cantoniera

95030 Etna Sud - Nicolosi Nord (CT)

So am I right in saying if I just put that into the satnav it should direct us up the mountain and right to the entrance of the Funivia?

Do you know how much it costs and are tickets bought on the day when we arrive?

Grazie.

Hi again deanovilla,

Latitudine: 37.700537 Longitudine: 14.998385

Reach via Nicolosi or Zafferanea Etnea.

Can't miss it.

It's the highest point you can drive on the mountain.
