Glacier express

We are arriving in Zurich in March, and would like to travel on the Glacier Express. Would it be practical to travel from Zurich to St. Moritz or Chur by train, and then get on the Glacier express to Zermatt? Will we be able to do it all in 1 day?

We plan to buy a Swiss travel Pass, as we are traveling only by train while in Switzerland- is it wortwhile, or must we rather buy a Swiss Half fare card?

Thank you!

Hi Merchen N,

The trip from Zürich to St. Mortiz will take 3h45 with 2 changes of train. For most folks this would not be a problem since the day of arrival is pretty much shot due to the time difference and jet lag. You could just stop by a grocery store (they are on the middle level at the airport between the arrival gates and the train station in the basement) and get some snacks for the trip. You can usually buy some coffee on the train, and that will help you to stay awake for the trip.

I strongly suggest that you stay in St. Moritz for one or two nights to get over jet lag a bit before you take the 8-hour Glacier Express to Zermatt. If you had an overnight flight, then a 3-hour train ride on one day, then an 8-hour train ride on the next day, it would be a marathon and not a vacation!

Once you know your itinerary, you can price out all your trips and then determine whether the Pass or the HFC will work best for you. You can get all the fares and schedules at the Swiss rail site

Have fun!

Just to support 'swanday' and say it would be a shame to arrive and depart from St Moritz and the canton of Graubunden in such a hurry. There are several areas of the canton which demand a visit St Moritz lies in the Upper Engadine valley much which has been written about on these forums.
