Travel from Brugge to Schipol Airport by rail

Can you please tell us the best train route from Brugge to Schipol Airport. Can tickets be booked on line? Is it necessary to do so in advnace for late October travel?

IC train from Brugge to Antwerp and then IC or Thalys (high-speed) from there to Schiphol. You cannot "book" seats for the domestic leg of the journey although you can buy tickets in advance if you want to, and indeed must if you want to travel by Thalys as this train is reservation-only. Note also that while the route via Antwerp is geographically more direct (and the one the timetables will give you for most timings), you can also go to Brussels and change there.

You can buy online from http://www.b-europe.com/Travel but you don't have to purchase in advance if you will be travelling IC all the way (albeit changing in Antwerp), you can just turn up at the station and buy tickets there. Although, as this is an international journey (Brugge to Amsterdam-Schiphol), you will be charged €7 "administrative fee" if you buy at the station or by telephone as opposed to online.

On the Brugge - Schipol route, I notice many of the routes published in the timetables allow for only 5 minutes between connecting trains at Gent and Antwerp. Is this sufficient time for someone who is not familiar with these stations to locate the right platform for the connecting train?

5 minutes might not be enough. I'd recommend getting an earlier train from Bruges to be on the safe side. Antwerp Central station is a truly beautiful railway station so you may actually enjoy the half hour wait.

We just completed the trip from Brugge to Schipol as described. Two things worth noting: The train from Brugge to Antwerp left 9 minutes late. We were glad we took an early train to Antwerpe,as we would not have been able to make the connection that we originally had hoped for. Secondly, after buying tickets on line about a month ago, the Thalys train from Antwerpe to Schipol was overbooked. Luckily we found seats, but barely! At least three people stood the whole time in our 2nd class car alone.

If it was Thalys it's not exactly that it was overbooked. What will have happened is that an earlier or later train was cancelled - possibly owing to the strikes in France - and then they take people on other Thalys trains, but obviously they no longer have a reserved seat (or any seat if the train is full..).

You still have to book in advance for Thalys, whereas it's not necessary with InterCity (IC) trains, and this allows for more flexibility for connections as IC ticket is valid on any train of the same type (on the same day if bought online, or within a month or so if bought at the station.

Remember that whether Thalys or IC there is now a €7 fee for buying an international train ticket at a station. You don't pay this if you buy online, but you do pay a €4 fee for using a credit card.

I did this trip last week.Leave yourself adequate time. The train from Brugge arrived at Antwerp almost 10 minutes late and the train to Schiphol was held up at the Dutch border due to an accident on the line. However the rail staff are very informative and courteous.

I don't think that the French Thalys site charges you for using a CC

I know the Dutch NSHispeed site does so is this also the case now for the Belgian site qaminari? €7 is an outrageous charge for buying a ticket on the IC train. What is the charge for? They don't even need to make a reservation.

Turning up at the station to buy a Thakys ticket will cost you much more than booking in advance and you can also get an ABS ticket which will be cheaper and cover travel on any train from Brussels to Antwerp.
