Porto to Lisbon, surely it can be cheaper?

Hi guys,

Sorry I know that this topic has most likely been posted before but I am travelling with a group of 5 other people to Porto on 1st December. We are cheap, poor students but know that it is only a few hours to Lisbon and want to spend some time there. We looked at the train website and it just kept telling us that it cost about 28.50 euro each way from Porto to Lisbon and back per person. We thought this was expensive considering it's more than our flights from Germany to Portugal. Is there a cheaper option or are we getting the wrong result? Anyone know if there are group tickets available of 5 or 6 people? We tried the bus website but tehy wouldn't let us see the price unless we gave the email and details of all travellers.

Any help would be very very much appreciated =)

Two bus operators on the route:

http://www.renex.pt - Price € 18.00 per Adult one way

http://www.rede-expressos.pt/ - Price € 18.00 per adult each way

Returns may be should be slightly cheaper

It's 350km from Porto to Lisbon - a long way.

Bus slow and cheap

Intercity train faster but a little more expensive

Alfa Pendular High Speed train even faster but more expensive

There are not many countries in Europe where you can travel 350km for 18 Euros. Group tickets on trains in Portugal are available only for groups of 10 or more.

PS 1st December is a public holiday in Portugal, so train and bus schedules are as for Sundays.

I have this morning received an email from Portugal Railways (slightly ironic as they are on strike today as is the rest of the country) which offers a 25% discount on certain Alfa Pendular trains Porto - Lisbon if booked 7 or more days in advance.

These are the 0547, 1147 and 2047 trains with similar offers in the reverse direction, bringing the fare down to €21,50 in tourist class. These discounted tickets are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. Also, this special discount is valid for both classes (turística/conforto) but do not cover journeys on Fridays, Sundays and the eve of public holidays.

Similar offers do appear from time to time for other journeys.
