After visiting many of the Algarve's coastal villages and towns from January 11 - February 11, 2010 -- from Tavira in the east to Sagres in the west, and north to Loule and Monchique -- we were most impressed with Lagos as a self-sufficient, clean and interesting "working" town as opposed to just another condo/resort cluster in the Algarve. The beach is lovely, the promenade along the harbour entrance provides a great place to stroll, and the old town is very worth exploring (the city museum and fort are particularly quirky little jewels) . The municipal pool is a great place to exercise or just relax. It has a cafe which serves excellent coffee, pasteries and lunch and has free wi fi as well.
We feel that we were really lucky in choosing Lagos over other Algarve holiday destinations and the condo we found suited us perfectly. (www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/p427285…)
We enjoyed its overall location just outside the main traffic area, overlooking the peaceful fields leading to the beach near the marina. It was too cool for the pool in January, of course, but we made good use of the private tennis court and the quality rackets were appreciated. The condo was immaculate and very comfortable. The property manager was very helpful in giving us the grand tour and arranging for a cleaning service . We found the Pingo Doce supermarket to be a very convenient and most pleasant place to shop for groceries.
Cais J Cafe - great little bar on the Lagos marina - perfect for end of day coffee or beer
Leitoes Choupana - lunch restaurant just east of Lagos on the N125 before the water treatment plant - delicious BBQ roast suckling pig, chicken and homemade potato chips with fresh salad
O Galeao - restaurant in Lagos old town just in behind Japanese restaurant - wonderful steak dinner
Hope these comments are helpful - we really enjoyed our month in the Algarve. Locals are pleasant and very helpful, lots of English spoken and understood. Weather was more overcast that we would have liked but seems to be a weird weather winter everywhere.
