Since Crete is an island, land travel is not an option.

Athens, on the mainland of Greece, is 4,000km from Faro!

There are no direct flights from Faro to anywhere even remotely near Crete so my thought is that you would have first make your way to Lisbon, fly from there perhaps to Athens by some means and then by whatever means (plane, ferry) to Crete.

According to the Lisbon airport website there are no direct flights between Lisbon and Athens. You would have to find flights to Athens or Heraklion (Crete) via for example Rome (Easyjet and TAP fly between Lisbon and Rome) or some other large city in Europe.

You would have to research elsewhere which airlines fly to Heraklion airport on Crete

Out of curiosity I input the train journey Lisbon - Athens into the all-knowing German railways timetable database.

That told me the journey would be about 70 hours via Paris, Munich and Budapest. Add three hours Faro - Lisbon plus connecting time and that's about 3 days on trains.

In all honesty I think your best bet would be flying into and back out of London - once there you will be able to get a budget flight to Crete - flight times would be 2hrs30mins Faro > LDN and the just under 4 hrs to Crete.

I agree that flying via London would probably be the cheapest and most direct way of travel, less stops and more flight options. Easyjet, Olympic Air and Aegean all fly from Gatwick.

Here is a list of airlines serving Crete:

I have checked Air Berlin for a through route from Faro but the flights do not tie up.

You might want to check possible connections with the following airlines that serve Faro and Heraklion:

Transavia via Rotterdam

Germanwings

TUI fly

Easyjet
