Twin centre holiday?

We have been wanting to visit Porto for a number of years and now (in June) we have a chance to combine it with perhaps another place away from the city where we can do some walking. We enjoy scenic walking up to 10 miles, coast or hills and would like some suggestions of a centre, reachable by train would be good, from where we can easily access walks for a few days.

From Porto you can take the metro to Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim (1 hour) or the train until Espinho(30 minutes) and walking along the beach area.

There are 3 great places for some walking for a few days, one its the National Park of Gerês, another is the Douro Valley and the other is Arouca Geopark. The Douro valley is reachable by train, direct from Porto. The others are reachable by public transports altough probably not direct from Porto.

Thanks to you both, I will check out all the suggestions. the geoparque has hiking route maps on the site but it may be difficult to reach without a car..

I have heard that the train journey along the Douro is lovely but not sure how good the walking is, are there way marked paths?

There are walking trails within the valley, mainly marked out by the local councils which are not available online... juliedawnfox.com/2013/…

Here's an example of the trails in Lamego municipality (a town on the south bank of the river), they have 6 trails and a "piece" of one of portuguese inland St James's ways walkingportugal.com/z_distritos_portugal/Vis…

Thank you for your help, I have now booked our Porto hotels with a 2 night stay in Geres. We will consider a trip to Aveiro by train and possibly the beach as suggested, it looks as though there is plenty to do.
