Itinerary Advice

Planning a trip to the Greek islands for Fall 2018.

Will be departing from NYC and would like to travel to Athens-Santorini-Naxos for 10 days.

I am looking for advice in the logistics of the trip....

Is it better to go immediately to one of the islands and then spend a day in Athens prior to our departure flight home or do a day in Athens first and then travel to the islands?

Preference of going to Santorini first vs. Naxos first?

And logistically in traveling-Would you recommend flights from Athens to the islands, ferry in btwn the islands, and then flight from the island back to Athens?

Appreciate any suggestions or itineraries from people that have done this trip.

As you must be in Athens or at least the airport the evening before your departure you might as well save Athens for the end.

As to order of travel to the islands, I would base it on the ferry/flight schedule so as to not waste time.

My preference is to leave in the morning so that you at least have the afternoon or evening in the new location. Also I try and avoid dragging luggage around after check out,

Look at the ferry/flight schedule

There are more flights to Santorini than to Naxos, so you are more likely to get a good connection with your inbound flight if you go there first. Since you are already at the airport, and a flight to Santorini is only another 45 minutes, you may as well go straight on to the island rather than spending a night in Athens.

You will go by ferry from Santorini to Naxos, which takes about 2 hrs. Recommend Blue Star as opposed to a highspeed ferry, because you can stand or sit on the open deck to take in the views. With a highspeed you will be seated inside the cabin, and may not even be near a window.

Naxos has a small airport served by turboprops. You could also take a ferry back to Athens, arriving at Piraeus, which is closer to central Athens than the airport. While the ferry takes longer, it’s quicker to grab your bags and get a taxi into Athens.
