Is Limassol a good place to base for exploring the island ?

Hi

We are looking to visit Cyprus the second week in October. My husband and I intend to hire a car and explore while 20 year old son and girlfriend want to chill on the beach. Is Limassol a good base for this? Is it easy to get about and are the beaches good in the area? Also are there any areas in Limassol that you would recommend as a base? Thanks. Jeanne.

Limassol is a great base for exploring the island. It is pretty much equidistant from both Paphos and Larnaca airports (Larnaca maybe a little closer). It has a very long coast road approx 16K and the beach varies along that road. The far end, nearest to Larnaca is the quieter end and the beaches are quite wide (around St Raphael Hotel). It then goes through the Amathus area where there are good beaches and three very good hotels. Then through the tourist area where the beach can be narrow in places and the as far as the old town, new marina and castle area. The sand is dark.

There is a number 30 bus that runs the whole length of the coast road about every 15 minutes if your son wants to get around when you are out exploring.

I you want bwach and exploring, then yes, it's perfect. Limassol is pretty much in the middle of the south coast of the island with many good beaches.

For travelling, the Troodos Mountains are very close, with many wine routes. Pafos and Nicosia are both easy by car. Kourion (Roman villa, town and ampitheatre) is close by, as is Kolossi, with its Crusader castle.

As has been mentioned there is a regular bus along the seafront so anyone in Limassol without the car can get about easily. LImassol Marina, Old Town, Castle Square as well as all the tourist beaches, hotels and bars are on this route.
