Christmas in Austria?

Our family (5 adults - husband & I (in our 50's) and 3 children in early 20s) are planning a white Christmas this year, and Austria looks to be a great place to go...we think we would like to stay in a small village. We would prefer not to hire a car, so easy access to public transport would be ideal.....skiing is not a priority....would like to experience a Christmas in the snow! Any suggestions for villages with easy access to Salzburg or Vienna?

Well nobody can predict the weather and snow can not be guaranteed. Obviously more likely in alpine areas/ski resorts but prices are high in ski resorts around xmas.

If you want alpine you could consider staying in a ski resort type area the week before xmas and take advantage of low season prices.

Also various places have xmas markets and these mostly finish on 23rd/24th December (some places including Vienna have some that continue on through xmas)

If interested in Salzburg perhaps somewhere like Zell am See.

Fairly large and lively village at a lakeside with its own ski resort and the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier at Kaprun

It has its own Xmas Markets

Zell am See has its own train station and direct trains to Salzburg in ~ 1h30

There is a special ticket with Austrian rail called "Einfach Raus". Costs €28 f a group of up to 5 people travelling together. Gives you unlimited use of ALL Regional trains for a day. Valid from 9am weekdays (midnight weekends) until 3am the following morning. Only the Fast IC, ICE, EC and Railjet trains are excluded.

e.g. the Regional trains and EC trains run between Zell am See and Salzburg but take the same time.

Seefeld Austria is a beautiful little village with much to offer. It is 1300 meters above Salzburg so very often snow when others don't have it. The Village is charming at Christmas - indeed all year round. They have much to offer such as ice skating, tobagans and a beautiful indoor pool and spa area. Wonderful shops and restaurants.

Another special thing is that you can just hop on the train for short trip to Innsbruck for the day - about 40 minutes, or Mittenwald, Germany - with it's beautifully painted buildings.

A couple of years ago we went to Seefeld and it was a wonderful Christmas with lots of snow! Didn't ski or hire a car!

Sorry, missed the reference to that.

We were in Salzburg for one Christmas and yes, its a city, but totally charming enough to meet most of your criteria and excellent transportation to many places for day trips.
