Hallstatt, St Wolfgang or Salzburg for New Year's Eve

Hi,

I am planning to visit Salzburg area during New Year's Eve period, roughly on Dec 29 until Jan 2 with my family.

There are three places that we consider to visit and stay, namely, Salzburg, Hallstatt and St Wolfgang.

Out of those three places, which one is the best to celebrate New Year's Eve ?

We welcome all feedback with thanks :)

Salzburg or St Wolfgang would be best. Hallstatt has little to offer in the evenings and only needs a few hours to explore in the day time,

St Wolfgang is fine if you have a car but consider St Gilgen on the other side of the lake if you are relying on public transport----Salzburg, Hallstatt and St Wolfgang are easily reached from there,

The area away from the ski resorts will be very quiet at that time of year but there will be big celebrations on New Years Eve in all villages

on the wolfgangsee, the location with the biggest celebration on NYE is strobl. not an over interesting village but they celebrate more. terrific fireworks display. st wolfgang has more tourists so there may be a bit more going on there, and you would see the strobl illuminations from there

Hi all,

Thank you so much for your kind feedback. We greatly appreciate it :)

Looking at the pictures of those three places, they are really wonderful especially prior to Christmas Day with stunning Christmas Markets being held in all over Austria as well as the charming Christmas decorations.

Unfortunately, we will be spending the Christmas Day somewhere not in Austria.

Therefore, we are unable to experience the very well-known Austrian Christmas Markets which usually end either on Christmas Eve or on St Stephen's Day (Boxing Day), if I am not mistaken.

Will the Christmas decorations still up after St. Stephen's Day ?

What is the average December temperatures on those places ?

Does it usually more rain or more snow in December ?

temp in december around christmas will generally be around freezing. there may or may not be snow or rain. no guarantee of anything. austria is not big into christmas decorations.

the markets in st gilgen , strobl and st wolfgang will continue after christmas until new year! google "advent markt wolfgangsee" for dates etc. and a ferry interlinks the markets.

Thanks so much nakagoli for your response.

I couldn't agree more with you, it is very hard to predict weather nowadays :)

But personally, we love snow or sunny weather rather than rain since we could get soaked up when exploring the city/villages.

Very delighted to hear that we might still have a chance to taste the New Year Markets in St Gilgen, St Wolfgang and Strobl, though we believe they might be not as spectacular as the Christmas Ones.

Would it be better to visit Hallstatt during Day Time or after dark ?

the three markets on the wolfgangsee are really just a continuation of the christmas markets but a few stalls, those selling christmas decorations , will be closed. main emphasis will be on food and drink. if you can, get the last ferry back to where you are staying. in the dark it is a lovely journey. but do not miss it !

absolutely no point in going to hallstatt in the dark. it will be as quiet as a mouse with nothing to see. if you are using public transport, you really have to watch timing of last train, which will be around 1700 (i think)
