We're considering renting the "Alabastro" apt. in Volterra from the Parker Company for $1050/wk (mid-Aug.)

Anyone have anything to say about Volterra, the Parker Co., or???????????????????

I just went to the Volterra. Do you know it is at the top of a mountain? It was quite a ride up there and we chose not to stay as it was quite congested, touristy, and not conducive to walking, as well as quite a ride to get up and down. Beautiful town though. Instead we stayed in San

Giamiano for two nights. How many are going? We paid around $100 per night with breakfast, for hotels in May. Mid August is the busiest time, we were told, for tourism in Italy, so you will probably need prior reservations and it may be more expensive, but what will you do all week? If you like to stay in one spot and just relax then renting that apt. is probably your best bet. However, if you like to see and do a lot then you should reconsider staying in just one place, as there is so much to see around there, Florence, the Riviera, Pisa, all of Tuscany. Have fun!

Volterra is a lovely spot to visit for an afternoon but, as has been mentioned, it's quite a distance from anything else. You will spend much time driving in and out each day. From your previous posts it seems you would be happier finding something closer to the coast. Have you tried tuscany.net (worldby.com) or venere.com as there are apartments listed by area?

Hope that helps.

We decided against this apt. and staying in Volterra because the B&B near Pomarance was cheaper and, though the literature about the Volterra apt. didn't say it straight out, we thought the train/bus stations were strangly some distance away. We'll no doubt visit Volterra, but, for all the reasons you have provided, we're not going to stay there.

Because August is such a busy time, and because this will be our first visit to Tuscany, we think it's better to reserve this B&B for all 10 days of our vacation: it looks to be in the heart of Tuscany - the coast, Pisa, Florence, and Sienna all seem to be only an hour or two away, w/ the B&B centrally located. So the plan is to take off each day in a different direction to explore, sail, whatever...and have the B&B to return to each night. We do not want to spend our time in Tuscany in one spot watching tv - our plan is to use whatever accommodations we reserve solely as a place to sleep and shower before taking off to see something new. I've sent off an email to the owners asking about payment, and I'm hoping someone will know this B&B, or the area, and have some opinion on it one way or the other...
