Ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo to Lipari

Hi there,

My husband, parents and I are staying in Lipari from Aug 19-21. We are staying in Cefalu the night before Lipari and heading to Taormina after, so we were planning to leave for Lipari from Milazzo port. While I know the hydrofoil, or fast ferry, is faster, I like the idea of taking a regular ferry, ie one where we can sit outside during the trip and take in the view and fresh air. I know those are much slower. But I’ve taken hydrofoils in Italy before and don’t relish the idea of being trapped inside again, with no access to the outside, even if it means making the trip in half the time. My question is — is there actually the option of a “regular” ferry to Lipari that lets passengers sit or stand outside during the voyage? I can’t tell from the websites. Has anyone actually taken it and what line is it? If not, and we are stuck inside for all of the various boat options, then I’ll just book us on the hydrofoils.

Thank you in advance!

Denise

I think that all the ferries have at least an open deck. Maybe someone else can confirm.

https://carontetourist.it/en is the site for booking regular ferries

Well you're right, the journey in the large ferries is much more pleasant (as well as cheaper). But longer.

Yes, the ferry is slower than the hydrofoil and less expensive, but the open top deck on the ferry is very pleasant.

Hi Vagabonda,

So can you get a ferry, not hydrofoil, from Milazzo to Salina?

Alternatively can you get a ferry from Messina to Salina?

The Liberty website shows a timetable but doesn't specify the type of boat.

Thanks

This is so helpful everyone, thank you! And yes, the ferries are slower (which I don't mind) and less expensive (yay!) but also not as frequent, meaning their schedule isn't as flexible as the hydrofoils, which may be the deal breaker...

Has anyone taken the hydrofoil? Can you confirm that there is no outside area for passengers to stand?

You are required to remain seated inside on a hydrofoil.

Is it possible to stand up during the journey? Can I ask to visit the bridge?

Our vessels can reach high speeds during navigation and can perform un expected maneuvers.

For safety reasons, passengers must remain seated during their stay on board.

Liberty Lines : ONLY hydrofoils.

For ferries, other companies, the main one is Siremar (see #1 for website).
