Train from Rome to Montepulciano for tour and vineyard visit

Is it possible to take the train from Rome to Montepulciano to tour the area and visit the vineyard? Are there tour guides or taxis available in Montepulciano to transport us? We are looking for a tour and most tours we have found from Rome want 500+ Euro for 2 people. We did find Viator's Taste of Italy Food Tour to Chianti and Umbria on the day we can go; however, I am disappointed in the reviews. Has anyone taken this tour?

Thanks for all of your input.

The nearest decent sized station is in Chiusi Scalo, a half hour drive from Montepucliano. There are buses, but for a day trip you'd really need to rent a car (which you can do near the train station in Chiusi), take a taxi or hire a car and driver.

Yes....go to Chiusi and rent a car from there. You really can't explore Tuscany on buses and trains.

When searching on the Trenitalia website, do please note that the station is officially called Chiusi-Chianciano Terme (and don't forget the hyphen).

It will be a busy day for you with training to Chiusi, picking up the rental car, orienting yourselves, driving around, dropping the car, and training back. If you have a portable GPS with Italy maps on it, bring it along. It can be very helpful, particularly since you do not have time to get lost. Likewise, get a good map, e.g. Touring Club Italiano for Tuscany or Michelin map.

Would be very nice if you could spare a few days or an overnight, so that you could also savor an evening stroll and a supper in a Tuscan village.
