Best way from London to Annecy France by car

On 15th May I am travelling from London to Annecy France by car and would really like to know the best way and hopefully cheapest to get there. Also is there a border crossing, passport control etc and do I have to do anything to my UK registered car (right hand drive) to be able to drive in France (left hand drive) I am from Australia and not sure of procedures here.

I can't answer your questions about border crossing and I'm pretty sure you don't need any special permits for your car but as for finding the best route just use the website www.viamichelin.com. It gives you driving times and distances, toll and fuel costs and suggested routes (quickest, most scenic etc.). The times given do not consider stops for food/fuel/bathroom breaks nor do they consider bad traffic or bad weather. The fastest way to Annecy from Calais is all autoroute. Viamichelin estimates a 7-1/2 hour drive so plan on an 8-1/2 to 9 hour drive with stops and if traffic is OK. The distance is 841km and the estimated toll and fuel cost is about 165€.

If you are renting the car you will need to check with the rental company if they are happy for you to take it abroad. If the car is leased - likewise.

If you own the car, you will need to check with your insurer whether you will have comprehensive insurance whilst abroad - you will have 3rd party cover as a minimum, but some will charge you for a "green card" (temporary comp cover whilst abroad) and some may include it for free for up to 30 days per year.

Besides that, you may want to think about breakdown cover abroad (some uk policies include short-term European cover - you'll need to check) and you will need by law to carry in/on the car the following items:

Hi-vis vest for driver + passenger in case of breakdown

warning triangle

spare bulb kit

headlamp convertors/beam benders (a plastic lens that fits over the headlight)

GB magnetic/stick-on plate (if your car does not have a "euro" plate with the EU symbol and the letters GB at one end)

from July you will need also to carry a breathalyser

The above kit can all be purchased at the port/tunnel terminal, but you may find it cheaper to assemble it all beforehand.

When you go, you will need to take your driving licence, certificate of motor insurance and vehicle registration document (v5) - all originals, copies will not be accepted.

P.S. there is a "border crossing" to get in and out of Uk and you will pass through UK customs on the way out and sometimes French passport control (sometimes this is not manned). On the way back, you pass through UK customs and UK passport control. Once in Europe, you will find no passport controls in the Schengen area but will between France and Switzerland.

Diz, you're right, on a direct route she won't go anywhere near, but as it is only an hour's drive away I thought she might be tempted to pop across.

You're also right about the Schengen bit, but on my trips between the 2 countries there have always been customs staff around at the crossing, even if they don't routinely stop people, or only stop them on the autoroute so they buy the vignette, and Schengen allows for temporary "controls" where criminality is suspected, so with a socialist victory seeming almost guaranteed in the French presidential elections, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few French customs patrols as wealthy French people decide to take some "birthday money" over the border to their Swiss "relations" ! ;-)

Just about everything is covered above but if you're car is either a rental or leased not only will you need to check that its ok with them to taker the car abroad you'll also need a letter of authorisation from them along with all the other documents mentioned.

Oh & don't forget your passport, we were behind an American couple in a hire car at Folkestone that had all the paperwork but thought they didn't need their passports for a day trip as"its all the EU"

Thank you everyone for your help and comments, greatly appreciated. The car I am taking is our own, we just bought a little run about but with UK registration (we are Australian) and we had heard we had to do change the position of our with our headlights to drive in France?

That's easy to do, you buy headlight deflectors and stick them on, and if you are unsure there is always someone to show you. We got shown by one of the people that work at the port when we first started taking our own vehicle.. I always buy mine from amazon as they are cheaper to buy from there instead of on the ferry or from halfords for example.

There is a little terminal at the port where they sell the headlight adaptors (it's a plastic stick-on lens) or they sell them on the boat. In the packaging will be some detailed instructions covering pretty well every make of car sold in the last 15 years which will show how to apply them. If you manage to stick them in the wrong place - no gendarme will ever know. I usually buy 2 packs because, on occasion, the lens has fallen off. You can always stick the 2nd pack on ebay when you get back. I usually find Halfords to be more expensive than the ferry.
