Christmas Day Speyer

Hello -

Can anyone provide any feedback on what the town will be like on Christmas Day? We are on a river cruise with a stop in Speyer on Dec 25th. Just curious if anything will even be open? The alternative the cruise offers is a half day trip to Heidelberg. I am assuming most will be closed there as well, plus we were just there a few years back.

Thanks for any feedback. May just be a day to relax and enjoy the holiday on the boat I suspect.

Christmas Day is slow in every German city. If the weather is nice people will come out in the afternoon for a walk. Museums will be open, restaurants busy. Speyer has a magnificent cathedral and there is a service at 4:30pm with medieval and Gregorian choir music. Would be a unique event to join.

open on the 25th December

Speyer Technik Museum

Speyer Sealife

Historical Museum of the Palatinate

has e.g. the Golden Hat of Schifferstadt (1.400-1.300 BC) on display

and the world's oldest bottle of wine (325-350 AD)

They have also a special (temporary) exhibition about the Maya culture (if it comes to special exhibitions this is one of the most famous museums in Germany)

Speyer Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage) open on the 25th December for visitors ~12:30 - 16:00. As before and afterwards (16:30 Vesper (i.e. Evening Prayer) there are services.

Speyer's Christmas and New Years Market is closed on the 25th and 26th December.

I'd vote for Speyer; it is a great place to visit and very neat and tidy. Since the Historical Museum of the Palatinate is right across from the Cathedral, it is particularly easy. I had a limited time for the museum, but ended up taking a train out of town 2 hours later than I expected because i liked it so much. The museum cafe food is quite good, but very light. The goulash soup is worth trying, if they have it that day. The Speyer cathedral is absolutely worth a visit, so if you can make the special service I would go, but definitely visit the Cathedral either way. it is the burial place of Germany kings and the cathedral is quite a sight. You can get some lovely photos for your memory book.
