School holidays

I am planning a 2 week family trip to San Franciso , Yosemite and down to L-A for August next year during Uk school holidays . Am I correct in thinking if we travel at the end of August the schools in California will have gone back? Will this be better time to travel to these areas than beginning or middle of August? Thank you

Some schools will have gone back, but some don't go back until after Labor Day (1st weekend in September). So it might be a little less busy later in the month, but probably not in any noticeable way. If you want fewer people, avoid the Labor Day weekend since that is a big travel holiday. Also, Monterey has a big event called Car Week in August - this year it is August 17-23. It's a neat event if you like cars, but does make things busier and causes hotel prices to go up.

Late August is still busy here whether kids have gone back to school or not. We have a 2 day holiday weekend that usually hits at the end of August/beginning of September when it really gets crazy. Coastal weather is at it's best from Sept through mid Oct, so it will be a busy time for travel, but will be mostly childless or older couples.

I don't think it matters when school holidays occur in California. Big Sur gets visitors from all over the USA and the rest of the world.

Many schools in the USA don't go back until after our Labor Day holiday in September.

In fact September is still gorgeous weather and many folks travel at that time who don't have children.

August is California’s most consistently warm month and hence its busiest month. There’s no way around it: everywhere you go there will be traffic congestion and crowds.

Agreed: these (Big Sur & Yosemite) are worldwide tourist destination and they're just always crowded in the summer. Plan well and just accept that it'll be busy, or come back in the winter and risk snow at Yosemite and rain in Big Sur.

The last week of August this year is right before Labor Day weekend, which is always the first Monday in September. It would be better if you could travel the week before as the Labor Day weekend tends to be very, very busy here, and the crowds tend to ramp up a few days before.

To answer your question: Schools on the central coast go back in session around August 15th through the 22nd.
