Sydney - Blue Mountain - Hunter Valley - road trip suggestio

Hi,

We are planning to take a three day road trip in first week of Aug from Sydney to Blue Mountain. On day one we will start from Sydney and drive to Katoomba. Stay there for a night and next day drive to Hunter Valley and stay for a night before returning back to Sydney. We want to take most scenic routes and stop by to for any lookouts/falls/attractions. Any suggested itinerary? On our way from Sydney to BM, we want to do a stopover at Featherdale Wildlife Park. Thank you.

If you want to take the most scenic routes from Sydney to Katoomba to the Hunter Valley to Sydney in 3 days, you will be spending most of each day in the car and no lookouts or waterfalls.

Look again at the map. Even the most direct route from Katoomba to the Hunter Valley entails a 4-5 hr drive and backtracking from the direction you drove the day before.

Too far for a sightseeing trip, you need 3 nights, preferably 4 to include the Hunter Valley otherwise it’s all driving particularly if you want to go to Featherdale as well. Just spend 2 nights in Katoomba or a night each in Katoomba and Jenolan Caves.

To answer your question, Bells Line of Road and the Putty Road is the scenic route between the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley but that adds another 1-2 hours to an impossible schedule anyway.

All the best.

Thank you. I was thinking of following schedule:

Day1:

9:30am - 10.30am Sydney - Featherdale

couple of hours in Featherdale.

1pm-5pm leisurely drive to katoomba stop by at any lookouts - echopoint - three sisters

Day2

9am-noon couple of hours in scenic world

Noon - 6pm leisurely drive to hunter valley stop by for any lookouts.

Day3

Morning - walk around and visit few wineries

2-3pm - leisurely drive back to Sydney via route 33.

Will it work?

No, there’s nothing leisurely about that schedule. You’ll also spend a lot of money to just be in the car.with a couple of hours sightseeing here and there.

All the best.

Goi to Orange over HV.

Drive to Leura (nicer to stay then Katoomba via Fertherdale (probably only needs a1.4 hour visit). Next day drive to Jenolan Caves and then to Orange (overnight). Look around wineries and then drive home via Bells Line of Road.

"1pm-5pm leisurely drive to katoomba stop by at any lookouts - echopoint - three sisters"

Echo Point is at Katoomba. You will have time to also visit Katoomba Cascades, and Leura Cascades, where I recommend the 10 minute walk down to the lookout over the top of Bridal Veil Falls. You can also visit or re-visit Echo Point at night as the Three Sisters will be lit by spotlight.

You'll be out of SW by 11am if you get there at opening, i.e. before the tours arrive from Sydney. If you drive directly to the HV from Katoomba there won't be any lookouts, unless you detour at Winmalee and drive down to Windsor to meet up with the M7, then M2, then M1 to HV. There is a spectacular lookout at Hawkesbury Heights, called Hawkesbury Lookout, where on a clear day you can see to the coast. https:/…hawkesbury-lookout

+1 for DYTokyo's suggestion for Orange, or try Mudgee.

Mudgee is only a bit over an hour away from Katoomba, and a LOT quieter than Hunter Valley.

Nice country town, brilliant vineyards and cottages & farmstays.

You could head straight there and enjoy 3 nights of country air, and wine, and more wine.

Thank you all for your feedback. I am in Sydney only for five days. Probably will do more relaxed road trip next time around. One more question though - is it worth taking a risk to drive down from Pokolbin to Sydney airport to catch 12 noon flight? if yes, when should we start in the morning?

What day of the week?

If a business day, you would be caught in peak morning traffic. I wouldn't risk it.

If its an international flight, you need to be at the airport by around 9-9:30... if its a weekday you'll need minimum 3 hours from Pokolbin to Sydney, its normally 2.5 hours but with peak traffic it will easily add 30 minutes to your trip...

If I were doing that, I'd leave around 5:30-6am to be safe...
