1 or 2 nights in Kings Canyon

Hi all,

Looking for advice on a self-drive tour I am planning for August. We'll be flying from Sydney to AS (1 night), then driving to Kings Canyon (1 or 2 nights), on to Uluru (2 or 3 nights), then back to Alice Springs and the West MacDonnell Ranges (3 nights). We only have 9 days & 8 nights.

Which do you recommend : 1 night in Kings Canyon & 3 nights in Uluru, OR 2 nights in Kings Canyon & 2 nights in Uluru ?

Thanks for any views you may have on the subject.

Firstly, it's best to get to King's Canyon from the north via the Mereenie Loop road and that requires a 4WD and a permit ( a few dollars at the Alice Tourist Info Centre or Glen Helen lodge shop). That way you can go via wonderful places like the West Macs and Tnorala (Gosse Bluff).

I think King's Canyon is worth 2 nights. We saw Kathleen Springs in the afternoon then had a barbecue roo dinner at the "pub". Next day we did the rim walk and had dinner "Under a Desert Moon" which is excellent. Much better than the Uluru equivalent, IMO.

I think one night in KC is enough. As you are doing the West MacDonnells on your return to AS - spend a day driving AS - KC along the Stuart Hwy, stopping of course at the camel farm on the way - stay overnight, do Rim Walk first thing in the morning then drive onto AS for a sunset experience at Uluru. This will give you an extra night to make sure you can also enjoy a Kata Tjuta sunset which IMHO is far more spectacular than Uluru.
