Help on best way to do Melbourne/Yarra wineries/GOR?

Thanks to initial help from this forum we are planning trip for May.

Arrive Melbourne at 5am (yuk) on Sunday 1 May and depart afternoon 12 May.

This is a first go at a schedule:

thinking of say 2 nights Melbourne (maybe the Blackman or Olsen?)

then getting a hire car and doing 1/2 nts in Yarra Valley (Balgownie or Sebel?)

then over to Lorne 2 nts,

Apollo Bay 1/2 nts?

and Warrnambool 2 nts(Comfort Inn on Raglan or Sebel?) and back to Melbourne for last night.

Does this make any sense?

Is there a better order to do things?

If we stay in Lorne do we need to stay Apollo Bay too ( we do like leisurely touring rather than rushed)

Like seeing some sights - specially scenic, not great shoppers, love food, love wine, love a bit of people watching, but also happy curling up with a dvd and a bottle of wine at night too.

Are these hotels ok or has anyone any GREAT recommendations?

Where is best area to stay in Melbourne before we pick up car?

Overall happy to mix trendy/trad/luxe and basic - but clean is a must. Looking at prices it's pretty pricey compared to Europe, but that's life. Max prob $240 pn but like to get cheaper if poss

Can't wait for a flat white and a hedgehog (neither available here!!)

Many thanks

Sue

Hi Highfly, personally I think its quite a good plan. Doesnt seem overly taxing - other than a fair amount of driving but you get that whilst on hols, dont you?

As a yarra valley gal, I like both of those choices of hotels but my first choice is Balgownie. It is situated in the heart of the Yarra Valley in Yarra Glen & is a great base to do easy peasy day trips around the valley. Its about 20 mins to Healesville, about 110-15mins to Dame Nellie Melba's house in Coldstream and just a jump to visit me in Kinglake! You can see how far our town has come since the fires burnt us out almost 2 years ago. Also Croydon Golf club has relocated and if your a bit partial to a long walk ruined, its a gorgeous spot - even just for dinner.

The sebel is lovely but not technically in the Yarra Valley. It is located in Chirnside Park (which is just out of Lilydale) and since housing has caught up a lot, its getting a bit crowded.

Hope this helps.

Whoops - just noticed a huge typo - Dur!

Coldstream is 10 - to 15mins from Yarra Glen . Not 110 minutes!

It will be freezing at that time of year.Piscies holiday park has the best units overlooking the ocean at apollo bay .they have a spa and beautiful fire. Also a balcony better than some tacky motel.Lorne has turned into a very snobby place to be just good for a look around now.Much better further on at apollo bay you have the otway ranges there to.Have a think about Milawa and Bright as an alternative to Yarra Valley
