Does 4/7 mean 4th July? Is so it is winter and you won't be able to do the TAC without a guide & winter alpine gear such as crampons & ice axes.

Sometime we find Americans write their dates backwards so perhaps you mean 7th April??

Your days don't really add up to enough for the activities you want to do. You would need a minimum of 2N at Tongariro NP to fit in the full day Crossing (driving to & from Taupo adds several hours to the long day).

1. Arrive AKL; explore

2. Drive to Hobbiton & then to Waitomo Caves

3. Black water rafting; drive to Rotorua (2N)

4. Explore thermal areas etc

5. Drive to National Park/Whakapapa stopping at Taupo for lunch (2N)

6. TAC (is your child really fit enough for this 17 km alpine crossing/ and will you have adequate wet-weather gear, boots etc?)

Now your OP is:

7. Return to Taupo, drive to Napier - why? You will only have half a day to do something.

8. Drive to WLG (2N)

9. Explore WLG

I suggest:

7. Tongariro to Ohakune - bike ride; stay Ohakune

8. Drive to WLG (2N)

9. Explore WLG

Hobbiton is closer to Rotorua, than the caves are. To save-backtracking visit the Waitomo Caves first, then cut across country to Hobbiton (via Cambridge or via Arapuni), then drive on to Rotorua at day's end.

Yes, I am one of those Americans. We will be traveling in April.

Thank you! I will put serious thought into this. Napier is not a must so we can work around that. Our teen is pretty fit and will have many hikes around our area with elevation gain to prepare around our home area. We are from Pacific NW area of Seattle, so we should be outfitted for the trek.
