According to the DOC brochure, "The best times to view the gannets at Cape Kidnappers is from early November to late February. Nesting commences in mid-September and continues through to mid-December. The first chicks hatch in the first week of November and the last chicks depart the colony during May on their migration to Australia. Public access to the Plateau colony is closed between 1 July and Labour Weekend (October). This is to prevent disturbance to the birds during their early nesting phase."

Further.... several of the tour operators mention on their website that they Gannet tours begin towards the end of September. Here is the 2014/2015 schedule for Gannet Beach Adventures

While not the same numbers, gannets also nest at Muriwai Beach, just north west of Auckland. They should be there from August.... Another possible option for you.
