Bike rental and areas to ride

Bike rental and areas to ride

Spouse and I are traveling to NZ and will be staying in Paihia for a week in early September. This is our first trip to NZ and will join a tour group for 3 weeks after our initial stay in Paihia. I am looking to rent a bike while in Paihia and have been unable to find one to rent there. I am a serious rider that will ride at least 2 hours per day. Is riding in the area on the road or mountain biking hence do I need to rent a road or mountain bike?. Are there any groups that ride regularly that I could join? Appreciate any recommendations thoughts on riding in the Paihia area.

Hi Tim, There are a couple of bike tracks in the Paihia area. There is the Opua Track which is 14 kilometre return ride. You can hire bikes from the Opua Marina Cafe. Website http://www.toptrail.co.nz Another one is in the Waitangi Forest Walk/Ride where there are numerous tracks and this goes through to Kerikeri which is about 20 kilometres. Website http:/ /www.kerikeri.co/waitangi-forest-walkride/ On the Top Trail Website you will see that there is a Tour Cycle the Rail Trail which goes from Kaikohe to Okaihau which is a 2 to 3 hour ride. his can be picked up at Paihia but it is $75.00 per person with Transport there and back, Bike Hire and Tour. You can hire Bikes from Bay Beach Hire which is on the Beach Front South end of Paihia Beach. They have Touring and Mountain Bikes. Website http://www.baybeachhire.co.nz I would suggest that you may take a bike to Russell on Passenger ferry and 8 kilometre bike out to the Car Ferry at Okiato and come back on that to Opua and return to Paihia. Passenger is $7.00 per person 1 Way and Car Ferry is $1.00 per person 1 way. You could maybe cycle out to Haruru Falls which is about 5 kilometres north end of Paihia. The roads are a bit hilly and narrow in this area though. I do not know of any Bike Grouops but you could maybe goggle this in the Bays of Islands. I hope this is of help to you. Regards Sue

Hi Tim,

Hope you had a great trip up to the Bay of Islands a couple years ago. Just an update for anybody else reading this thread however. We have a brand new, world class Mountain Biking Park opened late 2016 in Waitangi Forest (only about 4km from Paihia). It is called the Waitangi Mountain Bike Park and has professionally constructed trails with proper signage and a range of single track trails from Beginner (Grade 2) to Advanced (Grade 5+). Currently there are around 15 to 20km of tracks, but building is ongoing and the plan in the next couple of years is to increase this to 70 or 80 kilometers of single track. It is a great place to ride already, and will only get better and better. Park owners ask for a donation of $10 per day to ride, which goes straight back to the trail building fund, however it is usually smarter to buy a 1 year pass for $25, which gets you heaps of sweet deals and discounts around town so you will no doubt make it all back in the same day over dinner or something. Also, bit of a plug, but if you are after some decent full-suspension mountain bikes to rent while you are up here so you can have a spin out on the trails, please email Paihia Mountain Bike Rentals at paihiamtbrentals@outlook.com and we will be able to tee something up for you :). Hope to see you riding up here soon anyway. It is less than 3 hours from Auckland too, so not too far.

Also, the local Mountain Bike Club up here is the Kerikeri MTB Club, it is pretty active and currently meets most Tuesday nights at Inlet Road, Kerikeri, or longer weekend rides are sometimes planned too. There are some local club built MTB trails over there too which they use. Cheers, Jonny

Between Jonny and Sue you've got everything covered. Great answers!

The only thing I'd add it to beware of bad/ selfish drivers on our roads. Wear flouro to be safe.
