Public transportation in Wellington?

Hey all!

Have never travelled to NZ before and am planning on using public transportation while in the central part of the city, for those areas that are a little longer to walk to. I'm just wondering if hailing a bus is common in Wellington? Or if it's more like Canada, where the bus driver just picks you up if they see you?

Thanks for your help!! :)

<<hailing a bus>>

Do you mean like a taxi? No - you have to be at a designated bus stop.

Do you mean signalling to the bus driver from the bus stop? Yes it helps the driver to know that you want his/her bus rather than a different route number.

Wellington city is very compact & walkable. Even in the adjacent suburbs there are walking tracks that make it quicker to walk than to drive into the CBD.

Most bus stops are used by several routes and different bus companies. It helps the driver if you can signal him/her that you want him /her to stop

Hi Mikaela,

There are several bus stops in CBD.

You just need to be at the bus stop for your ride. There are primarily Go Wellington, Newlands, Eastbourne, Kapiti and Airport Flyer buses. You can signal the driver to stop.

You can walk to most places in CBD too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Megha
