Which area in Gold Coast is good for a family to stay?

We are a family with two boys (10 and 4) and going to spend a week in Gold Coast this July. As it is a winter time, we won't go for a swim in the sea but would visit the theme parks and the fun attractions and enjoy walking in town and by the beach, eating and shopping around. Could you recommend the good areas for us to stay except Surfers Paradise? Would Southport good to stay? The position looks good; Not too far from the theme parks and has good shops and restaurants...? We will have a rental car. Thanks!!

My suggestion would be Broadbeach. Close to everything, Pacific Fair shopping centre, beach, restaurants, theme parks etc.

Southport is good with a young family. Equal is Broadbeach, so pick whichever property you like best.

Broadbeach and Surfers are better option than Southport. They are alot more touristy but with that you get alot of eateries the beach and attractions on Cavill. If you prefer a more quiet area Southport would be fine it has a direct route via tram down to Surfers and does have restaurants but they are more spread out.

I think the water will still be warm enough to stick the feet in on a beach walk.

If you find it is warm enough to do more than that, make sure to do it between the flags. :)

Why not Surfers Paradise? It's the tourist hub and has the most touristy things to do. Especially in Winter. If you want to be a bit more quiet stay just out of town to the north or south - but within easy walking distance.

Otherwise stay at Broadbeach, Mainbeach, Mermaid Beach or Burleigh Heads.

I too would go for Surfers Paradise. Find accommodation with heated pool so you can enjoy a swim.

Given OP has said <<Could you recommend the good areas for us to stay except Surfers Paradise>> seems pretty pointless to recommend Surfers.

RitzB, you can't go wrong with suggestions in post #5 Broadbeach, Mainbeach, Mermaid Beach or Burleigh Heads are all gorgeous.

We were just up there a few months ago and stayed at Breakfree @ Diamond Beach. 2 pools (One heated), 2 spas, a toddlers pool and playground. Pretty close to the tramline too.

Self contained apartments. We were really happy with it.

For a family stay I would recommend Burleigh Heads which is located about mid-way along the Gold Coast strip. There are lots of family eateries and coffee shops, a great beach to walk along as well as the National Park You are also not far from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (currumbinsanctuary.com.au)and Fleays Wildlife Park at West Burleigh (www.fleayswildlife.com.au). Despite the recent upsurge in nightlife in Burleigh Heads it has still retained its family orientated feel.

Missed that 'except SP' Sally. You are right, no point recommending it in this case.
