Trip Report 3D2N in Ballarat - August 2016

12th August early morning flew from Singapore together with my Wife. Landed in Melbourne around 10:20AM, but the customs seems crowded and only able to come out around 11:30+. After Waited for a while having a hot chocolate, found Sun Bus to transfer from airport to Southern Cross station. After buying MYKI cards, had our first meal at Grill’d next to V/Line ticket booth at Southern Cross Station.

Took 2:17pm V/Line train to Ballarat and reached around 3:40pm. Walked to BEST WESTERN Bakery Hill Motel via Lydiard Street North > Mair Street > Peel street and Checked-In. That feeling of walking through Ballarat streets for the first time in colder weather was awesome. And the next thing was puzzled about how to cross the road at a roundabout, Hahahaha…

The time we finished settled down at Motel was already getting dark, so we only went to Coles nearby bought some beef lasagne, milk & chips for the next day and had dinner at Mc Café at Bakery Hill.

The next day morning we found the weather is too cold (for us), so we had to purchase ski glows to withstand in that weather. After walking through Bridge Mall, visited Ballarat Town Hall for visitor Information. The primary reason was to use the public toilet :D

Having an hour for the next bus arrival to Ballarat Botanic Gardens, Walked to Art Gallery of Ballarat and spend about 2 hours there. Had a white chocolate & a piece of plum cake (?) from the café there, which was tasted good. Walked back to Sturt street and took Bus to Ballarat Botanic Gardens. The bus driver was friendly and helpful. We wander around the Botanic Gardens, Lake Wendouree and the Ballarat Tramway Museum till we reach the time of last bus back to Sturt street. We also had a ride on Ballarat Vintage Tram. Overall the day was really great – the Historical Buildings on Ballarat Streets, fresh flowers at Botanic Gardens, Vintage Tram Ride & The Tramway Museum, Great Architecture of the Churches we passed by, The food and the Local people we met :) For dinner we order a takeaway Indian food from Ballarat Curry House @ Little Bride Street.

The next day morning (Sunday) attended to mass at St Paul’s Church beside motel. The priest was so nice, introducing us to the rest of the people whom attended the mass :) - What a lovely beginning of Sunday. Checked -out the motel and took bus to Sturt Street, visited Ballarat Anglican Church at Lydiard Street South. The Church at the intersection between this street and Dana Street was closed, so couldn’t get inside – Just took photos :)

Again, walked around Sturt Street, Dawson Street South and Dana Street finding public toilet :/ On the way back taking photos of St Patrick’s Cathedral and St Andrew’s Uniting Church. There was church service in progress, so we couldn’t enter. Decided to walk back to Ballarat Station, on the way we saw a Beautiful Church of Ballarat Christian Fellowship at the intersection of Mair Street and Dawson Street North. Had a very bad fish & chips lunch at a café close to 103.1 Power FM @ Lydiard Street North and then we catch our train back to Melbourne for our 6N stay and 3 day tours to Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island & Puffing Billy :)

It was really a nice experience visiting Ballarat. Thanks to the friendly people I met over there and here in the forum :)

Hi Berkmans, thank you for sharing your Trip Report on Ballarat. We also love Ballarat and visit annually for Sovereign Hill and a relaxing weekend away. It really is a lovely little town with all the mod cons but with their heritage and historial buildings still in tact. The only thing missing are public toilets as I noticed that the older cafes don't seem to have them on site. Looking forward to your Trip Report. Did you visit Melbourne or surrounds?

Hi,

Thanks for the report. Being from Singapore it's hardly surprising you found Ballarat cold in August :-) It's a shame you didn't attend Blood on the Wattle" it was a highlight of our most recent visit.

Cheers,

Thanks for taking the time to post a Trip Report. I'm wondering why you didn't visit Sovereign Hill? The Vintage Tram sounds fun, I love things like that so I've noted it for future trip ideas.

Hi Mac M, Actually because worried if Sovereign Hill might not be so interesting, since they don't have any rides like amusement parks. So yeah..

Thanks for posting this - love a person who is food obsessed!

Sovereign Hill is not about rides - it is about immersing yourself in history, and it is fascinating....but if history is not your thing......that's ok.

cheers.

Haha.. I am okay with history sweetbiscuit21, but may be for an hour or two. Not sure if i could spend a whole day at Sovereign Hill without involving into some excitements - considering their ticket price for Entry & the Show.

Last year we were there at Brisbane & GoldCost. We loved Movie World & Sea World Rides, not to forgot the Jet Boating also :)
