2025 Itinerary Advice

We are an active couple in our mid 40s in the early stages of planning our 2025 trip to Alaska. We are planning a 14 day trip beginning May 31, 2025. This will be our second trip to Alaska. The experts on this forum were a huge help in planning our last trip and I've been reviewing numerous posts over the previous couple weeks to put together our next trip. We visited Denali on our last trip and loved it but we plan to focus more on the Kenai Peninsula this time with a couple days in Valdez. We will have a rental vehicle for the entire trip. We enjoy wildlife viewing and took into consideration that Denali is one of the best areas for this, but we're hoping that an overnight at Silver Salmon Creek Lodge helps to make up for this. Our other interests include hiking (5 to 6 miles roundtrip is good for us), kayaking, scenic drives, fishing and trying local beers/breweries.

I want to make sure the timing (early to mid June) and the order of our travel plans make sense. Any tips or critiques would be greatly appreciated.

Day 1 (May 31): Arrive in Anchorage around 2PM. Pick up rental car and drive to Glacier View with a stop on the way to pick up groceries (Palmer?). We've been looking at Sheep Mountain Lodge and will likely book a cabin here. With the 3 hour time difference we'll probably be in bed early.

Day 2: Matanuska Glacier Ice Fall Trek in the AM with MICA Guides. Drive to Valdez. We have heard that this is an amazing drive and along with exploring a new area this is one of the reasons we added Valdez to our travel plans. We would like to stop at the Wrangell-St. Elias visitor center. We likely won't have time to actually make it into the park but enjoy watching the videos at visitor centers. We'd appreciate any other recommendations for stops along the way to Valdez. We plan to stay at the Best Western Valdez Harbor Inn for 2 nights.

Day 3:We considered booking a fishing trip but will likely do this out of Homer instead, so we plan to do some hiking this day. I'd appreciate any recommendations for easier to moderate hikes. We also plan to explore the harbor area and check out some restaurants/breweries. Hoping that things will be within walking distance of our hotel. Please feel free to weigh in if we're missing any other "must dos".

Day 4: Take the ferry from Valdez to Whittier. It doesn't look like the 2025 ferry schedule will be out for quite awhile but we're hoping it's running with a morning departure on this day (Tuesday). Having never been to Whittier, we'd like to spend an hour or two exploring the town but haven't spent much time looking into this. Any recommendations? Then we'll drive to Seward for a one night stay before departing in the morning to Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. We've looked into staying at Harbor 360 in Seward, but with it only being for one night we're thinking it might not be worth splurging on this hotel. Any other lodging recommendations that would put us close to where our boat departs from the next morning? We plan to explore Seward this evening.

Days 5 - 7: Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. Assuming we will need to move our rental car from our hotel parking. Are there public lots nearby that we'd be able to park in while we are at Kenai Fjord Glacier Lodge for a few nights? I have contacted Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge and they are not taking reservations yet for the 2025 season but we plan to book 3 nights. We did the Major Marine tour during our last trip and loved it. We're hoping that the boat ride to the lodge will be similar. We're also very excited about kayaking and hiking within the park.

Day 8: We should be back in Seward by 5:30PM. I'm debating whether to book another night in Seward or head to our next destination (Homer). We spent quite a bit of time in Seward during our last visit and really enjoyed it, but don't feel the need to spend another night. It looks like it would be about a 4 hour drive to Homer, which seems "doable". It would be nice to make it to Homer that evening to give us a full day in Homer the next day. Thoughts or recommendations on staying in Seward vs driving to Homer that evening?

Days 9-11: Homer. We plan to book a fishing charter. I've seen good things posted about "Bob's Trophy Charters" but would appreciate any other recommendations. We also plan to spend time exploring the Spit, hiking and would like to check out Seldovia. Would appreciate any hiking recommendations.

Day 12: Drive to Soldotna for an AM flight to Silver Salmon Creek Lodge (overnight). We just finalized our plans with David and can't wait!

Day 13: Arrive back in Soldotna mid morning and drive to Girdwood where we plan to stay at Alyeska resort. My wife is looking forward to hitting the spa this evening and/or the following morning. We're leaving the itinerary open this day and the following day in case we run into weather that delays our SSCL trip. I would still appreciate any recommendations for the drive from Soldotna to Girdwood.

Day 14: No plans for this day so far. Maybe some hiking in the Girdwood area? Drive back to Anchorage for a late flight home (11PM).

If you want to look for other lodging in the Glacierview area besides Sheep Mtn lodge, there are Homestead Cabins, Majestic lodge, Tundra Rose cabins and numerous airbnb in the area. Lots of choices though Sheep mtn is my favorite restaurant choice in the area. :)

There are easy hikes from the Alyeska Lodge property and do plan to take the tram up the mountain, if the weather is clear. Spectacular views and in the gift shop there are some historic photos of the area under development as well as famous skiers who have raced there over the years.

Driving all the way to Valdez just to hike seems like a poor plan to me. Consider kayaking Valdez Glacier lake: https://anadyradventures.com/day-trips/ As for hiking: https://www.valdezalaska.org/discover/hiking-trails/

For Wrangell-St. Elias NP, you can't drive there unless you have a car permitted on the gravel McCarthy Rd. One company that allows that (if you decide you'd like to go there) is Midnight Sun, though you need written permission to take their cars on that road plus on the ferry. Though you could consider flightseeing Wrangell-St. E from Glennallen.

Speaking of the ferry: a Tuesday is *probably* okay for booking Valdez to Whittier, but no way of knowing for sure until the 2025 schedule comes out. That can happen anywhere from late 2024 to March 2025. So have back up plans in mind just in case.

I suggest you consider 2 nights in KF Glacier Lodge instead of 3. Not much hiking available. Add that extra day to Homer instead. And no, don't drive to Homer the night you get back from the Lodge. Even though you'll have lots of daylight, why knock yourselves out with a late arrival? And what if there is a construction delay (common near Seward the past couple of years)? Drive to maybe Cooper Landing. Or, consider a lakefront cabin at Renfro's on Kenai Lake. I think they still offer pedal-boats to their guests, but find out, if that is of interest. And of course there is hiking and beautiful views of that lovely lake. Read some reviews to help you decide.

For Seldovia you can either take the day ferry over, or Rainbow Tours Wildlife Tour. A very popular hike is a water taxi across the bay to hike to Grewingk Glacier. Also lots of kayaking options out of Homer, including at Grewingk Lake--though since you'll have already kayaked near a glacier while at KF Glacier Lodge (and maybe out of Valdez too), you might enjoy just the hike. But there are companies that do that tour--if of interest, Google "Grewingk Glacier kayaking".

I assume you're having your fish shipped home?

I like the Best Western in Valdez. I prefer the 2nd floor with harbor view and appreciate the small laundry on the first floor.

since you will be so close to Kennicott/McCarthy, I would hate for you to miss that. I would go there in a heartbeat over Valdez. Two nights, 2 days in Kennicott is great. Kennicott Glacier Lodge is my favorite place to stay but you can also stay in the town of McCarthy. Lots of history there plus the scenery is spectacular. Great hiking for short and long hikes. Kayaking too. The road back into McCarthy is better than in the past. There are car rentals that let you take the car on that road. However, if you can swing it, the flight from Chitina to McCarthy is breathtaking. Even though it's a scheduled flight and not flight seeing, it's really flight seeing and the pilots usually fly up the glacier so you can see when the copper mines were. One mine building is dangerously close to falling off the mountain. I think your idea of taking the ferry to Valdez is a good one. Just spend the night in Valdez in order to catch the ferry. I don't know when it departs. Good choice of Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. and yes, the boat ride to the lodge is the same as the other tours. There actually is hiking at that lodge. You can hike up a small mountain close to the lodge for spectacular views of Aialik Glacier. and we went on a canoe and hike to a lake nearby where there were bears. Really cool. Agree about not driving from Seward to Homer late in the day.. You could make it to Cooper Landing, spend the night and make it to Homer early in the day.

Your suggestion of 2 nights instead of 3 nights at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge makes perfect sense and we love the idea of adding the additional day to Homer. We’ll also take your advice and not drive to Homer the evening we get back from KFGL.

Thanks for the heads up on shipping fish home as we will likely go this route rather than transporting ourselves. Looks like we better add processing and shipping fish to our budget!

ChristyM

Love the idea of visiting Kennicott/Mccarthy.

The flight from Chitina sounds amazing and would best fit into our schedule. If we did end up doing this we would need to skip the Matanuska glacier hike and catch the 9:05 AM flight from Chitina with Wrangell Mountain Air. We would also likely want to book lodging closer to Chitina on night one. Kennicott Glacier Lodge looks great and we’d like to do 2 nights there with a return flight to Chitina on day 4 (Tuesday). If we stayed in Valdez that night we’re concerned that the ferry from Valdez to Whittier wouldn’t be running the next morning (Wednesday). Alternatives would be: only spending one night in Kennicott (not sure if that gives us enough time for glacier hike, Mill tour and exploring Kennicott and McCarthy?) or we could spend two nights, catch the 8:30AM flight from McCarthy to Chitina and make the drive that day from Chitina to Seward. This would be a long travel day and we would miss out on Valdez. We love exploring National Parks. This makes the decision even more difficult. Ultimately, we have to decide what makes the most sense for us but I’d appreciate any advice.
