Family Vacation

My family (husband, myself and 4-year old) are planning to go to Holiday World in early August. We are trying to find something else to do between here (Champaign, IL) and Holiday World to extend our trip a a day or so. Any ideas? We have already done trips to the zoo the last 3 years so trying to stay away from that.

First, welcome to the TA forums! A general rule is that giving more information in you question wrests in both more and better responses.

You might give some kind of indication about likes/dislikes, etc. (to give us something to work with). This will allow us to tailor suggestions rather then just giving generic suggestions.

That said, here's a short (gerneric) list you might consider: Bloomiington, Nasville, Columbus , French Lick/West Baden and Madison. Similarly if you overshoot (a little more than Madison): Louisville and some other things in KY might be worthwhile.

Hope this helps and looking forward to making less generic suggestions,

hlo

Dang auto-correct!

Of course, the sentence re: general rule should read, "A general rule is that giving more information in your question results in both more and better responses."

French Lick (about an hour away from Santa Claus) has a historic train ride that's a lot of fun and an indoor water park resort. Of course, if you're going to Holiday World, you might be water parked out. Lol. The resort recently opened a glow in the dark mini golf and lazer tag center that might be fun, if your 4-year-old isn't too young for that sort of thing...

(You don't mention where you'll be staying, but if you're in Jasper, that's about half way between Santa Claus and French Lick.)

If you're planning on doing something closer to in-between home and Santa Claus, there is a children's museum in Evansville, cMoe, that is super fun for kids that age. You could probably easily spend 4 hours there. And the Evansville Museum of Science has a few things that might be engaging for your son (free admission) along with a seperate train exhibit (for a small fee) that he would likely really enjoy. Both of those are located downtown, which is a great place for a picnic lunch and a stroll along the river, too.

Another thought would be a visit to one of the caves in the area. Marengo is our favorite and probably the closest at about an hour away from Santa Claus. Marengo Cave is a National Landmark, and the park that it's in also has gemstone mining and a couple of cool little quirky shops that sell candy, hand-dipped candles, jewelry and gifts. There's some hiking trails and a picnic area, as well.
