1st timer to portland area

Hi! 2 adults 1 teen headed to oregon city for EOT 2018 AAU girl tournament, and would like to know what area is most central to stay at? Not too far from oregon city, but in portland area to site sea, and be a tourist. We are from the East bay and plan to drive to enjoy the scenery, etc Any recommendations on things to do? places to visit? whitewater rafting? we’ll have to fit things in between games or on days off maybe 1-2 days of no basketball.

all recommendations are welcomed.

Thinking of airbnb so what cities: neighborhoods are good and nearby portland? thanks. 1st week of July 2018

Hi Fab K, welcome to TripAdvisor. The tournament is in Oregon City? You'll want to stay in that area or somewhere south/southeast of Portland proper? Is this over 4th of July?

How many days do you have to drive?

Portland is really, really jammed over the 4th of July. There are the fireworks plus the waterfront Blues Fest.

Which route you drive and how long you take depends upon where you've already visited? I'd opt for taking 101 north through the redwoods and staying a night somewhere about halfway. Then see part of the Oregon coast on your way to Portland.
