Escalante Camping Permit?

Hi! Do we need a permit to camp off hole in the rock road? The Escalante visitor center is closed so I cannot get a permit. Not sure what to do. Thanks!

Unless things have changed, (in all the years) I have never gotten a permit to camp out Hole in the Rock rd. OK so I just looked it up and this is what I read.

Primitive camping is allowed in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Glen Canyon NRA. ... Overnight permits are required within the Monument for all overnight car camping. Permits are free of charge and may be obtained at visitor centers or at developed trailheads.

Since visitor ctr is closed, see if you can find a trailhead kiosk on the way out HITR rd, and get a permit to fill out.

I'm not telling you to do this, (disclaimer) but...... if I couldn't find a place to get a permit, it would not stop me from camping somewhere out on the road. If a ranger or BLM employee happened to be out that way, I'd explain to them why I didn't fill out a permit. As far as I know, there is no charge for one, and the permit is mostly for information on who and how many are using the resource. My opinion.

@Powergut, where did you get that quote from? The BLM site says that it is only "recommended": "A free, overnight permit is recommended for dispersed camping outside of developed campgrounds."

https://www.blm.gov/learn/interpretive-centers/GSENM_VisitorCenters

I did notice that there are some non-BLM websites saying "required", but I question their accuracy. I was just there in the fall and, I agree with Powergut, I wouldn't hesitate to camp wherever -- there are many, many established camps off the road.

Thanks for that post DTF. I must have had an older link.

Anyway......I have never gotten a permit to wild camp on BLM or National forest land in the mostly 50+ years I've been doing it. For that matter, never had any ranger or BLM employee visit our site in all the years. Plan on continuing this practice for many years to come.

kaylinstark, enjoy yourself out there in HITR rd. Hope you have some good hikes planned. Lot's of good stuff out there.
