Historic Must Sees - Road Trip Advice - VA & PA

Hi - we are planning a 16 day road trip to explore some of the American History with our two grade school children - 12 and 13... we are from the UK and would love some suggestions and guidance... we are driving to and from IL... our kids are used to road trips as we've done them out West on a couple of occasions...

You'll see that I don't have DC or Boston on the itinerary as we'll tackle those on separate trips...

We would LOVE any suggestions that you have re MUST SEE'S... roads/routes we absolutely should take as we go on our adventures...and any DON"T BOTHER... I know our list is long, and we may need to tweak it down a little so we have time to sleep... I'm after great guidance on the things we shouldn't cut, and those that are good, but less impactful.

Civil War battlefield Gettysburg PA

=======

When visiting Gettysburg, we recommend:

Visitor’s Center – Battle Field Tour Guide Film & CycloRama

GUIDE FEES: 1-6 people per vehicle= $60.00

https:/…fees.htm

Add 1-2 hours to the Battle Field Tour Guide's fees.

You will have read history, and will come prepared with many questions -- Have the Battle Field Tour Guide drive your vehicle -- there will be many stops.

Colonial Williamsburg Williamsburg VA

We highly recommend that one purchases a pass to

America’s Historic Triangle

history.org/foundation/historic_triangle.cfm

The passes have several prices, and are well worth the $$.

I’ve been to pretty much every place you have listed, both in Virginia and in Pennsylvania.

Here are the attractions which I think you should definitely include:

1.Carnegie Museums—especially the Carnegie Science Center and the Highmark Sportsworks

2. Gettysburg Battlefield (and definitely pre-book a tour with one of the Licensed Battlefield Guides). And pay to see the Cyclorama in the Visitor’s Center.

3. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell

4. Adding the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia because it’s a cool place that teens would like.

5. Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown Battlefield, American Revolution Museum

6. Monticello

7. Adding Shenandoah NP if your trip takes place from March - November.

I highly recommend Mt.Vernon, but I’d save that until you come to DC. It’s a short drive from DC to Mt. Vernon (30 minutes or less).

thank you so much for all the suggestions... we plan to visit as soon as school is out for Summer, so end of May / beginning of June. All of your suggestions are great, I am going to research them and have another look at our itinerary!

Thank you so much!
