1st trip to belize in 1 week. last min questions!

We arrive to Belize City on March 1st and head to San Ignacio. Group of 3. We have a shuttle scheduled to take us to the Midas Resort. We'll be in San Ignacio until March 6th. We have tours booked for several activities in San Ignacio area and Tikal ruins. Xunantunich and Cahal Pech we are planning on exploring on our own. Is the bus easiest way to get to these ruins?

Ambergris Caye March 6th - March 11th. We don't have a shuttle booked when we head back to Belize City. Planning on taking the bus to save money. How long are lines at bus terminal? Do we have to be there an hour+ early to get an "express" bus? Ferry leaves Belize City at 3pm. Do we need to leave San Ignacio by noon?

Your best bet is to rent a car. Considering there are 3 main roads you won't have any trouble . Stay out if Belize City leave the airport quickly via rented car and only return when going home. We have been there 2 times and going back in September for my birthday

You can get to both Xunantunich & Cahal Pech on your own.

Buses run every 30 minutes between San Ignacio and Benque. Get on one and ask the conductor to drop you at the road to Xunantunich. You'll see the ferry to cross the river, then it's less than 1 km to the site. Coming back, wait on the side of the highway, and wave at an approaching bus to get it to stop. Bus fare is BZ$2 each way.

To Cahal Pech, we walked from the centre of San Ignacio town. It's uphill all the way, so you might prefer a taxi for BZ$5 or $6.

In San Ignacio, the bus queues won't be long. The very early morning buses might be busy with workers & students going to Belize City & Belmopan, but by 8 or 9 am, you shouldn't have any concerns. And buses run every 30 minutes. And people don't really queue up here-- when the bus doors open, it's a mad rush -- just squeeze in. Luggage usually goes at the back of the bus -- sit near it to keep an eye on it.

You don't have to be an hour early for any bus in Belize. Just turn up where the bus waits, and get on the next one going. The schedule shows a Shaw's "non-stop" bus that leaves San Ignacio at 12 noon and arrives at BC at 2:15 pm. Any later buses will arrive too late for the 3pm water taxi. I'd get an earlier bus.

From the bus terminal, it's 1 km to the water taxi terminals (there are 2) -- get a taxi.

Hi- we are planning almost the same trip, do you mind telling us how you went to Tikal from SI? Did you book a tour (can you recommend someone?) or by bus?

We are there around Easter.

Thanks !
